Subject: In general, use policies, but not yet for “Synchronize Contacts”

Walter,

Most of what you want to do can be accomplished via Domino policies. They need a bit of thought and planning, but are very powerful, and definitely the way to go in managing your Lotus Notes clients.

Start off with a long read of these Domino Administrator 8 Help topics:

http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/domhelp/v8r0/topic/com.ibm.help.domino.admin.doc/DOC/H_POLICY_SETTINGS_DOCUMENTS.html

http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/domhelp/v8r0/topic/com.ibm.help.domino.admin.doc/DOC/H_CREATING_A_DESKTOP_POLICY_STEPS.html

The basic principle is that you set up one or more policy settings documents of various types (mail, desktop, registration, etc.) and then assign them to policies. You can use Organizational Policies, which apply to everyone within a particualr part of your naming hierarchy, or explicit policies, that you assign person by person.

However, for some unknown reason, it isn’t yet possible to use policies to centrally enable the “Synchronize Contacts” option for users. (IBM: Surely, you can sneak this important fix

into 8.0.3/8.5.1?)

Here’s an existing posting on this issue: http://www-10.lotus.com/ldd/nd8forum.nsf/5f27803bba85d8e285256bf10054620d/f4cc82d0e02e42388525738e006cd879?OpenDocument

The “warn about blank message subjects” and “default duration for anniversaries” settings can be both be set through Mail Policy Settings. Desktop and Registration Policy Settings are also widely used.

Hope that helps,

Rupert Clayton
