N2H2 Internet Filtering is what you need. It will take care of all of these problems. Check in to it.

There are many ways that you can do this, mainly using third party applications though. Ways we have done this in the past is to use McAfee Groupshield and its (albeit basic) content filtering to block jpg’s, bmp’s etc. The problem is that it’s a simple system and you can therefore bypass it by simply renaming the file extension. URL’s could be blocked with the same package using a rule in the body text that blocks *.com etc, but then you will inevitably block legitimate emails.

Alternatively, depending on your Domino version you could create certain rules that search on similar criteria, but it could escalate into an administrative nightmare for you…

Why not look into a web content filtering package such as Websense? We use that in my office and it works a treat for stopping downloads. Email wise we use Mail Marshall which can scan for picture files, even if the extension has been changed.

If I can help any further please let me know.

Cheers,

Alex

thanks for sharing your experience with that. It’s critical because this is a bank, and users are viewing porn or sending porn at their desks. It’s amazing how rampant it is here. And if a customer comes in the office, of course they can’t see that. These people cannot be fired because they know proprietary information which would be valuable to our competitors. so it’s a difficult situation.

Rodente,

Your employer has people who “cannot be fired because they know proprietary information?” That’s insane! Not that it’s your responsibility to do so, but any employer who provides proprietary information to employees and does NOT require them to sign a non-disclosure/non-competition agreement is just begging for trouble.

The fact is that if your employees know they cannot be fired, they’re going to feel enabled to do just about anything they damn well please - and the spread of pornography might just be the least harmful of all of them.

I can’t imagine the situation you find yourself in. I hope you find a solution that will do what you need.

you people are so boring and humorless, that what makes it so fun to mess with ya.

Subject: RE: Oh Chuck…

Rodente,

It has nothing to do with being boring and humourless, it is just our (not yours of course) Social Engineering that makes us assume people are genuine and are presenting genuine problems.

I, for one, see no humour in you and if you attended just one LotusSphere, you would see that the people here are far from boring and humourless (that is of course, assuming you would survive the arse whooping people would likely give you!).

Alex,

Wouldn’t stopping image downloads block a lot of legitimate uses?

Does your company have a formal policy against such things? If so, and you know who’s guilty, it would be a good thing to address directly with the employee. We can’t always rely on technology to enforce behaviour. Like the other person said, the users will always find a backdoor if your only line of defense is technology.

read me other post. It’s not my place to comment on these users, only to do my job.
