Help please: SUSE, Notes install

Hi

Background:

I would like to get to know Linux a bit better and therefor bought myself an IBM T41P. I bought and installed SUSE 9.0 and found that a lot of the Laptops functions where not working - i.e. WLAN, Bluetooth etc. I then asked a friend to take a look at it (the Laptop) for me. He installed a couple of programs and, above all, installed wine! He then configured wine to work with the Notes version I had on my Windows D drive (/windows/d/lotus/notes/notes.exe).

I then decided to buy SUSE 9.1 as (apparently) the T41P was fully supported - I formated my linux install and did a clean SUSE install - low and behold, most of the things worked pefectly - god was I happy ;o)

Now here’s the problem - I made some notes when my friend was installing WINE and thought that I had it down pat. I then tried it myself - I cannot get it to work (have been playing with it for 2 solid days now)…

Here is my current installation:

  1. install XP on C: (NTFS)

  2. install and configure Notes 6.5.2 on D: (FAT32)

  3. Install Redhat 9.1

  4. Use YAST (YOU) to update my installation to the current packages

  5. Install wine from www.winehq.com

  6. Run winecfg to set C: and D: to /windows/c and /windows/d

  7. Copy mfc42.dll and msvcp60.dll from Windows to ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system

(i also copyied it to: ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32 and ~/.wine/drive_c/windows

 just to be safe)
  1. run notes

    cd /windows/d/lotus/notes

    wine notes.exe

I then get the Notes Splash Screen and nothing else - in the terminal that I started the I get the error that wine cannot find the files that I previously copied!

I have checked the thread on installing on Linux:

http://www-10.lotus.com/ldd/nd6forum.nsf/DateAllThreadedWeb/7c0f5c42281a6d9485256e2a00801caa?OpenDocument

i.e. => have updated the config to not use Explorer and set IM to connect manually.

I have also reinstalled everything (a couple of times actually :o)

Anybody out there who can help a would-be Linux convert ;o)

Thank you for any help given !!!

Ursus:

The easiest way around this is CrossOver Office. Which you have to buy, but the cost is only $30-40, and worth every penny. You can run the lotus notes install in minutes, and have a functioning notes install. The changes are passed down to wine, but after crossover office, i would never mess with Wine anymore on linux.

Hi Louis

thank you - I will give it a go - although I would like it to work with X-Office → I have already spent to much money on my “test” environment ;o)

Thank you for help

Hi

ok, I gave XOver office a try and seem to get the same error - unable to access data directory ‘d:\lotus\notes\data’ using preferences file “z:\windows\D\lotus\notes\notes.ini”

Basically I assume that I have some error or other with the WINE configuration. I wanted to check the config file but cannot find one in my ~/.wine directory - where could this file be?

Any other ideas?

About a month ago I got the Notes 6.5.1 client (for Win32) running under Crossover Office (COO v3.0). This is on a rather modest PC running (Red Hat) Fedora Core 2 (v2.6.8).

I used the single-user install of COO into my “ordinary (not root) account” so they are in “~/.cxoffice”. Under this directory you will find the works of the COO product, as well as all the WIN32 applications. All the interesting stuff, for me anyway, is in the “fakewindows” directory. Once you get there, things start resembling a normal Windows 98 system.

Hope this helps & have fun.
