HELP - Cannot get Domino 6 to run on Win2K

Hi,

I am - trying to - evaluate Domino 6 for a client. The story so far:

  • Domino 6 was installed on a fresh install of Windows 2000 Server (SP3). The install type was of an Enterprise Server. The machine specs are:

    Dual PIII/550 MHz processors

    512 MB RAM

    Win2K server SP3

  • The installation per se went fine - no errors, notifications, whatever.

  • When trying to run Domino for the first time, instead of the expected configuration screens, I get the Windows hourglass for a few seconds, and after that, nothing. I tried running nserver from the command line - same results.

I should mention that this test machine is also running IIS (it IS a test server, after all…)

Also, there is no (explicitly installed) Java or ANY other software on the machine. It’s just W2K + Domino.

I tried looking for some kind of log files, but besides the install log file, there is nothing.

Am I missing something, is there some sort of conflict or what?

Can somebody out there PLEASE help me

Thanks,

Augusto Carvalho

The Download is for the right platform, no AV or other software installed. I have an inkling that the problem is in fact some port or other conflict with IIS or associated software. It does not however seem to be “that simple” - I have attempted stopping the sites in IIS Admin, but still Domino config will not run).

Thx,

Augusto

This is a real shot in the drak but we did have a problem here like that. Have you changed the display settings at all? On version prior to R6 Notes used to prompt you to say it needed more than 16 colours to run. In R6 it doesn’t prompt you for this, and if you only have 16 set then it fails to run. It was a test server we had with old display drivers. We updated to run on more colours and a minimum of 800x600 and the server suddenly started okay.

We have been able to install and configure Domino on ANOTHER test machine, but I will try to update the display drivers on the original machine to see what gives (the server we finally managed to get it to run on does have true color in its display settings (the original server was in fact with a default VGA/16 color setup!).

I’ll keep this forum posted as to whether this behavior is indeed due to color depth.

IMHO IBM/Lotus should be aware of this and change the SW to notify the user - Other software usually does! - Display color depth is seldom a prime consideration for server-class machines…

Thanks all!

Glad your up and running Augusto. Agree the software prompt shoudl of remained from R5. It was pure luck I stumbled across it. As soon as you move up from 16 colours it works. Not something that will affect many, but annoying when no errors are displayed.

Ok, we tested this on 2 different machines under Win2K (server and professional - hey, these are for testing purposes, ok). The problem is with the color depth on your server - less than 256 colors and serversetup quits with not as much as a warning or log.

Thanks all!!

Where did you get the file from…a download from LDD? or ?? If you got it via download it maybe that your download was not complete. Another reason could be that the file you downloaded was NOT for the Win2K platform…a common error. I’m running a downloaded nd6.0 (not 6.0.1) enterprise server on Windows XP Professional(which as you may know is really a hybrid between Win2K and NT5)and have had no major issues with it. I use it mainly for development purposes as well as email testing.

If it were a download for the wrong platform then it wouldn’t even have installed…

Did you have any anti-virus software running during the install, or now during the attempted startups? You said that there was nothing else on the system, but people sometimes forget AV software, as it’s become so much of a base requirement for any system.

Personally I suspect IIS might be the problem. (Not due to it being IIS, but due to possible port conflicts, or due to DLL issues.) Try disabling that and starting Domino again, if possible.
