After replying to emails in delegated mailboxes you can see the reply mark/icon next to the item. Why is this not the case with forwarding ?

Because the Forward function is part of the Notes infrastructure, and did not have to be coded into the Mail template, like Reply was. You can use Forward on any document in any database (unless the designer has turned it off).
The Notes 8 template was modified so that it does flag a Forwarded document.
It would be possible to modify your Note 6/7 mail template, and write your own Forward code that would update the view though.
