Forgets selections when you want it to remember, forgets them you don't?

Is it just me or has anyone else noriced the Notes client R7 regression for selections?

— Incorrectly remembers selections —

Yo may have to do this a cople of times to see the problems.

  1. Full text index your mail file, wait for it to complete indexing.

  2. Open inbox, open search bar, click in search bar. Note that cursor has moved from highlighted doc to search bar (bar indicating current doc’s has changed from thick lines to thin lines)

  3. Click more to see additinal options, change SORT RESULTS BY to KEEP CURRENT ORDER (SORTABLE)

  4. Type a word you know will be found in several messages, click search. Note the number of docs found (shown in the status bar message area). Note also that the cursor has moved from the search bar to the current document, as it should.

  5. Click All Documents to switch to that view

  6. Note that the bar indicating current doc’s selection bar is thin again, and the cursor has moved back to the search bar. ****** This is a regression. ****** When you click on the current document, the cursor moves back to it.

  7. Press space bar twice, so you can see the current document count again in the space bar. Note that the number of selected documents matches the previous search count – it should have been reset back to zero. ****** This is also a regression. ******

  8. Press F3 to try to move to a slected document. Notes beeps at you, because it can’t find a selected docment. Try clicking action bar button Folder->Move to folder. You get an error, “Cannot execute the specified command.” That’s becase Notes is confused about whether there are any selected documents to act on. ***** This is a regression ***** This is probably a more serious regression, because the user has the impression that the CURRENT DOCUMENT could be moved to a folder, and can’t understand why.

  9. Switch back to inbox. Click on current document, press space twice again. Still have those documents selected – you’d think that at least in this, the view where those documents became slected, you coudl see the selections. Nope. Notes reall does not have any documents selected, it just thinks it does. Nothing can act on these phatom selections, so it ain’t just a regresison ****** it is a true bug. ******

— Incorrectly forgets selections —

A well known trick: If yo have docments selected in one view (or folder), then hold down the control key while switching to another view (or folder), Notes keeps the selections. This has been invalable to many people for many years, becase it allows yo to se different contexts to find docments in a view sorted one way, then operate on them or print them in the sort order available in the second view.

Well, it doesn’t always work anymore. Seems to be a symptom of the same problem as before. To demonstrate:

  1. Close and re-open your mail file (so yo are in a “clean state.”)

  2. Open your mail file, go to Inbox

  3. Highlight a message and press space to “select” it. Remember the sender, time, subject of the message.

  4. Hold down control key; withot letting go, click on ALL DOCMENTS to switch to that view

  5. Note that Notes DOES remember what the crrent docment was – the same sender, time, subject is on the current document. If you want, you can confirm this by moving to another document, holding control while switching to inbox – the current document is now the second document; hold control and switch back to All Document to continue this demonstration.

  6. Note however, that Notes has now forgotten which document was selected (check mark in left column). However, press space bar repeatedly, and you will see that Notes does still remember that there is a document selected somewhere – the selection count switches between 1 and 2 as you press the space bar repeatedly. ***** This is a regression ***** It appears to be a symptom of the same bug.

  7. If you control-click back to the Inbox, you will see that inbox DOOES remember the selection.

Subject: Experiencing this in 7.0.2 also (re: Forgets selections…)

I’ve seen this in all 7.0.x versions, but I didn’t click as to the cause (as you have, Dovid). Most frequently I see it as the “Cannot execute…” error when attempting to delete mail or moving them to folders - the documents selected for a previous operation (Move to Folder, eg.) are not reliably cleared from the selection when that operation is carried out.

Only workaround I’m aware of is to Edit, Deselect All before moving or deleting - a right p.i.t.a.

Any word from Loti to confirm this is a known/logged issue and being worked on? I can’t find any reference in the Fix List db.
