Finding an email in the past year?

Anyone have any suggestion on how to pull out an email sent to a particular address that may have been sent in the past year?

It’s a bit of a needle in a haystack, but I’d like some ideas on how any one would accomplish it.

I have access to backups for the past year, but I’m more curious how I could do a global search to find the email address.

Subject: Finding an email in the past year?

Hi,

Do you have message tracking enabled?

If not, I think you will have to search in your backups

JYR

Subject: RE: Finding an email in the past year?

We do have message tracking enabled. however, I can’t find the MTSTORE.NSF database location. I was thinking we could utilize that and restore it from the time we needed. I’m also not sure how long retention is on the tracking database.

Subject: Finding an email in the past year?

I take it you do not have mail journaling or some other type of email retention process? If this is not the case then good luck. The only way you will be able to retrieve the email would be to go to a backup and hope that the email was not deleted on the day it was received. If it was deleted before your backup ran then there is no chance unless it was forwarded to someone that did not delete the email.

As for how this can be done… no easy step there and I am sure you are aware of this. You have 1 year of emails to go through and only the ones that were not deleted. This is not going to be quick. Your best bet would be to refine the search to a day or even a month and then try and work out where it could have gone.

Do not get me started on using this as proof for anything because anyone can change the email and save it without there being a set audit path.

Well good luck with the search.

Organizations requiring searches of numerous users and mail files – in some instances years of archived history can do so far more efficiently and cost effectively, with Silverblaze’s Forensic Mail Investigator, designed to work with Lotus Domino Mail systems. Mail systems are a critical repository of organizational information. On occasion, this information must be searched for specific words or strings, or as part of a larger investigation. This information must be presented in an organized and concise format to those in charge of the investigation.
