EMC Email Extender and Email Retention for Litigation

We are currently evaluating EMC/Legato’s Email Extender in our environment to use as a means to retain email for litigation purposes. I would like to hear from anyone who has had any experience with this product for this purpose and would specifically like to know how the product performs. We have not purchased it yet.In addition, I would like to hear about what other products are being used for this same purpose. We are running mostly Domino 7.02 servers on Windows and iSeries platforms.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Subject: EMC Email Extender and Email Retention for Litigation

Hi Shelly,

We run a current version of EmailXtender (4.7.X) at my organization on pSeries, running Domino 6.5.X. While the EMC support has been getting better, we have been plagued with numerous bugs and other issues in the EX software including:

  1. Services that do not shut down cleanly

  2. Processes that crash intermittently

  3. Lack of verbose logging for some of the processes when troubleshooting

  4. Lack of notification system when tasks complete

  5. Scheduled jobs that lose their configurations (i.e. what servers they need to run against)

  6. Regular corrupted indexes

  7. No support for admin searches when logged into a Novell workstation

  8. Issues with returning shortcutted email

  9. Other weirdness that happens without explanation

Based on my experience, I would not recommend the product.

Subject: RE: EMC Email Extender and Email Retention for Litigation

Thanks Brad, It seems we have had some similar experiences. We were using 4.8 last December when it first came out in a pilot setting. I wasn’t happy with it then and I’m not very comfortable with purchasing it for production at this time.
