I am feeling a bit thick, maybe its because it is Friday afternoon before a holiday weekend (at least where I am).
I cannot for the life of me work out what is signified by the tick against the groups or roles when displaying effective access.
The user is in all the displayed groups and has all the displayed roles, so what does the tick mean? The help, didn’t.
Can anyone enlighten me?

The “Groups” and “Roles” boxes on the right of the dialog box show all the individual and group name entries and roles that could potentially control the selected name’s access to the documents in the database.
What I have always interpreted this to mean is, if I have selected from the “People, Servers, Groups” field, the name of a user, and calculated access, the tick marks show me what users, groups, etc., have the ability to control that particular user’s access to this database, either thru their access to the database, or via their access to a group in the address book in which the user resides.
The “effective access” calculator to me is most useful when I am trying to determine what access a user has, when they are listed in several different groups which are in the ACL, and those groups have different access, roles, etc. It is not really useful for calculating my own access to the database.

{Presuming you are referring to the “Security” button on the bottom of the Notes Client}
When you connect to a server, all of the groups that you are in are recorded by the client. This button shows those groups.
If there is a check mark, then those groups are in the ACL of the current database, and are giving you access to that database. (Note that the usual ACL rules apply here, so that if your name is in the ACL, then any groups you might be in are ignored, and not used to calculate access)
At the bottom of the list are the roles that you have in this database (but they are NOT checked, which always causes my mind to wonder why my users don’t have the roles they should have - frustrating !!!)

Humm…on close examination, it seems to do the same thing (grin)
However, you get to select the user you want to report on, while the button just shows Your access, and you get the additional authorized actions to the right.
(I might start using this more than I have been.)

Totally agreed. very strange UI presentation that is inconsistent and confusing.

Graham,I agree with what you say, excpet one thing. I’ve found out that with 6.5.1, this statement “(Note that the usual ACL rules apply here, so that if your name is in the ACL, then any groups you might be in are ignored, and not used to calculate access)”, is not entirely true.
We’ve discovered that the exact opposite is true, now. If youare listed by name as Designer and a grup you are in is listed as reader, you have reader access.
Weird, but true.

…and would presume that there is an issue as to how the user was set up in the ACL.
For example, is the correct, FULL name (i.e. Graham Richards/Markham/IBM ) listed, or just a short name ?

ARGHH!! I knew I should have tested in my environment before posting. You are all correct, it does work. BUT, I was just at a Notes 6 Upgrade seminar and it was tested there and the group ACL was the heavier of the two. Not sure what it was, but I’m glad it does work as it has in the past.
