Duplicate UserNames

Hello-

I’m a user, former Notes Admin tho.

A person with the same name as me was just hired, except he has a middle name and I do not…

Example -

John Smith/ABC Company

John J Smith/ABC Company

In both of our person docs, we share the same username - John Smith

John Smith/ABC Company

John Smith

jsmith

John J Smith/ABC Company

John J Smith

John Smith

Can this cause a problem with sending mail to either of these people? Someone tried to send me a meeting invite and received an error stating something about duplicate id’s.

Thoughts?

THANKS

Subject: Duplicate UserNames

When mail is sent Notes should throw up a dialog box of mathcing names to the user to select the correct one, maybe the user did not know they had to do that.

If they hit cancel then the problem you described occurs.

Remove the “John Smith” from the “John J Smith” Person document. That way, he will have to be addressed with the middle initial included and your name “John Smith” will not be confused with the other.

Mind you, users will have to know the difference between one and the other but type-ahead and name resolution will not have a problem.

I know that it can be removed and I thank you for your response, but I guess my question is can this cause any kind of errors during name lookup?

Have you seen the error before that I described?

Try the following:

  1. Open up your address book

  2. Open the ($USers) view

  3. Locate one of the “john smith” entries

  4. Select it on the left selection bar

  5. All the other entries belonging to the same person should also be automatically selected

  6. The other “john smith” entry will not be selected (since it belongs to the other document).

When the server is sending the mail, it will find two documents having the same “john smith” entry and will not be able to resolve the address to a unique document in the address book, so you should expect to get errors.
