Dumb question

In R6/R7, how do I create a R5 style embedded view in a form? Every time I create an embedded view, it opens documents in an embedded form instead of an MDI window. I don’t use a frameset. Is this a hideous bug or an undocumented change in the way Notes works?

Hi Chris,

How are you inserting the embedded view? I have checked inserting into R7 client at my end and it displays the view properly.

Create->Embedded Element->View…

I am unaware of any other way to do it. Of course the view displays properly, the issue is that the documents in the view won’t open properly.

Is there any way in R7 to create an embedded view that does NOT open documents in an embedded editor?

Subject: RE: Same question worded differently

Personally I’ve never inserted an embedded view that opens documents in an embedded editor, so you must be doing something to make them open in an embedded editor.

Look at the help for creating an embedded editor, it goes through how you make a doc from an embedded view open in an embedded editor - make sure you haven’t got any of those settings set. I think the main one is the “Target Frame” in the embedded view.

Also, Iris doesn’t exist any more so asking for help from them is not going to do anything (and this is a public forum, so even IBM/Lotus wouldn’t necessarily help you here anyway).

The only solution I can think of is to install an R5 client for the specific purpose of creating embedded views, and to use R7 for everything else, has anyone tried this or is there a better way to work around this bug?

Hi Chris,

How about using an embedded editor to display a document?

Insert an embedded editor using Create → embedded element -->Editor

Name it “display”

Now, in embedded view properties, Specify the above name in target frame for single click.

Hope this helps.

Munish, It’s even easier than that… all documents in embedded views open in an embedded editor regardless. When the document is opened, an embedded editor replaces the embedded view and opens the document. What I need to know is how do I get documents to open in the Notes Client instead of an embedded editor?

Subject: RE: Dumb question

I’ve got three Notes versions installed normally (5, 6.5, and 7), so I’ve just tested this and cannot make documents open by default in an embedded editor.

In one database… I created a form in Designer V5 and embedded a view, and I created another form in Designer V7 and embedded a view.

Then when I open either form in either client version, and double-click a document in the embedded view, it opens in exactly the same way as it does when double-clicked in a normal (not embedded) view.

Looking in Designer help, I see some stuff about linking embedded views to embedded editors.

I haven’t tried it, but it looks like it requires that your main form has both an embedded view and embedded editor in the form design, and the view’s “target frame” must be set to the name of the embedded editor.

If you haven’t done that, then double-clicking docs in the embedded view should open them normally.

Can anyone from Iris shed some light on this?
