Domino on linux, QP and SameTime on Windows

Hi,I am working between all other things as a Domino Administrator, and i am in charge(got assignment) about choosing a platform for domino server(Linux or Windows)

Since i am linux lover and had experience with win and lin domino servers i am 100% pushing on linux, however:

it may happen in year or two that they 'll want SameTime or QuickPlace (which i havent seen/install/work on so far), and there is no Linux version for them.

1.is it possible att all to connect ST/QP running standalone on a win server with domino on Linux(can they run standalone and if no should i buy another(extra) licence for domino under win)?

2.if it happenes to mix the environments (that meens that i should buy another machine (what are the HW requirements, can i pass with cheaper, smaller machine)

3.anybody has experience doing this, please post or e-mail me.

4.advises “should i go totally under win :(((”

Thank you all

Aleksandar

Sametime and Quickplace run as part of a Domino server. You would have a Windows2000 server with Sametime -OR- Quickplace installed on that same Windows2000 server.

Your other Domino servers could run on Linux. These Linux-Domino servers could replicate names.nsf (the Domino Directory) with your Windows2000-Domino servers.

You have many options with Domino. For example, you could have a cluster of Domino servers. The servers in the cluster can be different plaforms. Linux, Windows, AIX, Sun…

I was told a few weeks ago, by someone at IBM, that Sametime and Quickplace for Linux should be available Q4 2003-Q1 2004. I haven’t seen this confirmed anywhere, so take my previous sentence as a rumour, but I thought I should let you know, anyway.Even it I hadn’t been told anything, I would spect it to happen in less than 2 years, as it would be a bit silly having Domino on Linux and not being able to install any of all the available “addons” it has (in fact, that’s the only reason why we still install Domino on Windows from time to time).

As far as I know, there are no plans for a QP or ST Server on Linux.

You can run your core Domino server on Linux (6.0.x), then install QP and ST each on their own Windows boxes. You can’t install them on the same box, even in a partitioned server. However, you can set them each up to use LDAP, and set up LDAP on your main Domino server, and point the QP and ST boxes to those servers.

As fare as I know, QP and ST each come with their own Domino core server license, as they do require that you install each of them on top of a pre-existing Domino server.\

As for hardware - it depends on your population. ST is not very storage-intensive, but I would get as much processor and memory as you swing. QP is less processor-intensive, but more storage is needed.
