Domino Licenses - Blackberry Solution

We have our production instance of Domino Server installed on an iSeries. We are going to be obtaining some Blackberry devices. We’re not going to require a BES, so we’re going to use Blackberry Professional Software. Unfortunately, this cannot be installed on an iSeries, so we are going to have install an instance of Domino on a Windows box and then make emails that go from the phones to that server are replicated to the main server and vice versa.

Does a separate license of Domino need to be purchase for the Windows installation? It’s really only going to be acting as a replica (or is it?), but I just want to make sure.

I think that is a Legal question to ask IBM.

Yes, each instance of the server you run needs to be licensed. Generally, this means a license for the server (based on # of processor value units). The exception would be if you’re under some all-inclusive per-user licensing scheme, such as the IBM Domino Express license (Hybrid cloud software for a smarter business | IBM), the Complete Enterprise Option or a similar academic program.

As you’re looking at Blackberry Professional Software, which only allows up to 30 users, then maybe the IBM Express license would suit you, too. I haven’t worked with BPS, but if it operates like BES, then you don’t actually need to place mail files or replicas on the Windows server itself (although BES does need to run on a Domino Windows server). BES can use the Domino API to access mail DBs on any server in your Domino domain.

Hope that helps,

Well, it looks like we’re going to have to get a license, though we don’t need the enterprise edition. The per user would be good if I knew we would stay at 10 users, but once it gets past 12, then we’re better off doing the messaging server.

BPS does run like BES (even the RIM people I have spoken to simply refer to it as BES), but when I set up the Domino server on the Windows box, what do I have to do so that it communicates with the actual email server? I’m glad I don’t have to replicate the mailboxes and such but when an email is sent from the device, how does the BPS take that and move it over to the email server?

Hey Jay,

If your BES Domino server is from the same Domain domain as the email servers, you do not have to worry about the setup for the communication between them. However, if they are in different domains, then you will need to cross-certify them and create connection documents to facilitate the email routing. Talk to your seasoned Domino guys.
