Domino Job crashing on iSeries

HiThe following message is appearing on our iSeries.

Enter a character to allow Domino job 399214/QNOTES/SERVER to continue

Reply . . : g

Nothing appears in JOBLOG. I try different character on

the reply. If you reply with a character the server do nothing and you must restart domino.

Any ideas as to what is causing this and/or how to solve it?

TIA

Are you using BRMS as your backup software, and if so are you seeing BRMS job alerts for about the same time as the Domino server hangs?

I ran into a case where BRMS backing up a very large and very active mail file would cause Domino to hang or crash, so if that looks like a possibility I’d suggest opening up a call with the BRMS support team.

You did state that the Domino job is crashing, correct? That is, a NSD file is being generated and on the Domino console there is a stack trace of the crashed thread.

Was support on your system? There are a couple of undocumented environment variables that will cause the server to “hang” after it has crashed. This allows support or development to debug the crash, before the server recycles.

I don’t understand your comment about “if you reply with a character the server will do nothing and you must restart domino”? It doesn’t matter what character you reply with. Any character should cause the failed job to continue (generate the NSD) and eventually end.

The main issue is why is your server crashing? With the secondary issue being that someone has set an environment variable which prevents the server from auto-recycling itself after the crash.
