Domino 8.5 Backup Solution - Where is it ?!

Several of my clients are looking for a Domino 8.5 backup solution. Can anyone recommend backup software ?

One of my clients has the latest Backup Exec 12.5 version, but it fails when trying to backup Domino 8.5 servers. As of 3 weeks ago Symantec still does not know when Backup Exec will support Domino 8.5 according to Senior Technical Support Engineer (Ben L.) as seen in the Symantec Forum below.

Does Backup Exec 12.x support Domino 8.5?

Ben L. writess (2 weeks 6 days ago): Not at this time.

Symantec Backup Exec for Windows Servers

Backup Exec 12.5 for Window Servers is the gold standard in Windows data protection for physical and virtual systems, providing comprehensive disk and tape backup and recovery support for Windows-based environments. Continuous data protection and patent-pending Granular Recovery Technology for critical Microsoft applications helps to ensure that business critical data is always protected and efficiently restored in seconds.

Backup Exec Agent for Lotus Domino Server

Backup Exec Agent for Lotus Domino Server The Agent for Lotus Domino integrates comprehensive data protection of vital Lotus Domino 7.x and 8 messaging and collaboration databases within daily backup activities. The backup and restore of partitioned and clustered Lotus Domino servers are also supported. Using the native Domino backup API, this option integrates non-disruptive data protection of the databases and transaction logs. Plus flexible restore options include database redirection and point-in-time “rollback” recovery of databases or transaction logs. Users benefit from user-controlled recycling of the transaction logs, reducing manual intervention and speeding up recovery.

Subject: Tivoli

Might be too much for your operation, but Tivoli Storage Manager along with Tivoli Data Protection for Domino works just fine here with 8.5 servers and ODS 51 databases.

Subject: Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM ) for Domino 8.5 (ODS 51)

Thanks Leonard for your quick response. One of my large customers might want to purchase it to backup their non-mail db’s, but highly doubtful for my smaller customers. I assume they will only need to purchase “Tivoli Data Protection for Domino” to backup their Domino web apps (non-mail db’s).

Tivoli Data Protection for Domino

Data Protection for Domino provides a full capacity to backup and restore Domino 8.5 NSF and NTF databases and transaction logs either offline or online. This document provides an overview of the Data Protection for Domino product and describes the additional steps necessary to backup and restore Domino 8.5 NLO files.

Subject: DAOS

Lance,

in our case we were pretty ballsy (Symantec NetBackup) and we ran it on 8.5 while it was not officially supported: Did not run into any problems. I believe 6.5.3 officially supports 8.5 but it is probably too big for a small customer.

Your next problem will be DAOS. Nobody does automatic restore of DAOS enabled DBs (yet). We had to write our own prgram to achieve that (using the Domino Wiki intrsuctions and Symantec command line programs)

Subject: Symantec Backup Exec & ODS

WE are also having a problem with Symantec Backup exec - we are about to commence the upgrade of over 100 of our servers on many sites, many of which use this product for backup. We have only just found out that it’s not supported on 8.5

Does anyone know if anyone if the ODS version makes any difference - if we don’t upgrade this will Backuo exec work?

We were told my Symantec…

“At the moment 12.5 doesn’t support Lotus 8.5 and is unlikely to. The first version to support it will be the new release of BE due early November”

Thanks for any info, Anne

Subject: Backup your Domino Windows server using Program documents

We temporarily implemented another free solution below until Backup Exec supports the new ODS version in Domino 8.5.

Backup your Domino Windows server using Program documents

NOTE: I am assuming Backup Exec would probably work in Domino 8.5 if you never upgraded the ODS. We could not test it since we already upgraded the ODS using “Compact -c” and server notes.ini parameter Create_R8_Databases=1.

One of clients successfully reported that Legato backup with the Domino agent worked successfully. But I noticed many repetitive warnings in the Domino log file.

Thank you,

Lance Zakin

Subject: Customising NETBackup 6.5.3

Hey Im impressed with the initiative to write your own program. Any chance on getting a little more information on how you did it? I would like to recommend something similar here and we have 8.5 on Netbackup 6.5.3.

I have read the wiki’s but am anything but a NetBackup pro. I could send this information on to my support team.

Subject: Sorry I am late, but here is the answer

The idea is to follow the 4 steps:

  1. Restore the nsf file (either via GUI or via command line)

  2. Get the list of missing nlos by running “tell doasmgr listnlo -o missing_nlos.txt MISSING Location_of_restored_nsf”

  3. Restoring the missing nlos by commandline (bprestore -C computer_name -S backup_server -p backup_policy_for_nlo -s start_date -e end_date -w -f missing_nlo_file)

if you want I can give you the VB code. It is not pretty but you can change it at will (ppassin@gmail.com)
