Difference between lotus notes and lotus domino

Hi All,

I’m still new to Notes/Domino environment. I have several questions to ask:

  1. What is the difference between Lotus Notes and Lotus Domino Designer?

  2. If I already installed Lotus Notes, do I need to install Lotus Domino Designer?

Please advice.

Thanks in advance.

IBM Lotus Notes is a client application you use to access and work with Notes databases and Notes applications (consisting of one or more Notes databases). IBM Lotus Domino Designer is a tool, an application development environment, which allows you to develop/design Notes databases and/or Notes applications.

If you already installed IBM Lotus Notes and you are not going to build new databases, then there is no need for you to install IBM Lotus Domino Designer.

Ok…thank you for the explanation. How about if I want to use Lotus Domino Designer?

Do I need to install Lotus Domino Designer or is it embedded together when Lotus Notes is installed?

As you are installing Notes, you should have to option to install Designer (and/or Administrator) at the same time. They are optional components of the client.

Try a reinstall, and look to options to select those componants.

Domino is the name of the Server version of the code, rather than the Client.

Subject: License cost is NOT optional

while its true that many of the forms of distribution media for Lotus Notes include all three of the Client, Designer and Admin functions

they are NOT optional components of the same program but 3 distinct executables (tho they do share common libraries etc)

More importantly they are licenses separately

with Designer and Admin being a significantly higher cost than the Client…

You may not assume that because you’ve paid for 50 Clients you can install designer 50 times.

Subject: You are correct about Designer, but not Administrator.

Subject: You are kidding, right?

or maybe not …

The Lotus Notes Domino family is about sharing information

  • between users at different locations using different technologies.

The Lotus Domino is the “server” component - holding the shared sets of data - and making them accessible simulatneously by several ‘clients’ across most LANs and other comms methods.

(FYI a Domino server computer need not be - indeed usually is NOT - a network file server)

Domino servers are available fcor many platforms on many hardware.

The Lotus Notes program is the ‘fat’ client - accessing data on one or more servers.

The Notes client is availabel for may platforms and some diffrent hardware.

At one time, Lotus Notes was the ONLY client that could access Domino servers . However since Release 4.5 an ordinary Web browser can also be used to access the data

provided the application is built that way [see designer belwo]

(FYI, before version 4.5 the server component was simply known a the Notes Server. Domino was the name of the product that allowed browser clients hence the change of branding)

Lotus Designer is a development tool to build Notes applications - (client based).

(FYI, the designer offers a range of technique and languages - some Notes specific some gneral e. JAVA)

without it you can only deploy new applications based on ‘templates’ developed by someone else.

(FYI, Lotus supply some basic templates - others avaliable from 3rd part

however many user develop there own - or at least customise)

The family is rounded out with Lotus Administratior - whch allows a user with the correct priveleges to control both the servers and the deployed applications.

The designer and admin programs are only available for the Win32 environment

One complication - because the original concept for Notes included the ability to work OFF-LINE

you can pull a ‘replica’ of an application from the Server onto a client machine and work there - using only the Notes Client

(or with an added cost option even a browser)

one things for certain,

if you dont yet know the above you certainly should not install Lotus Designer :={
