Designer

Again, had to let my domino admin go. Going into the designer and the agents, when I want to change something in the agent, I get a message that the template is not in the same version and will not save any changes I make. This is correct, how do I fix this ?

Thanks

Subject: What’s the exact message?

I don’t know any message that says what you said. Perhaps you mean “If you make changes to this design element, you may lose them, as it inherits its design from a different template.” What to do about this depends what you’re trying to achieve.

Also, it appears you don’t know the basics of Notes development. I’m nervous about your going in and messing with the design. I can understand you might have to make some tough decisions to save money in your business. But in my opinion, the last person who has any idea how to maintain your mission-critical apps, is not expendable.

I understand your concern. It was not my desicion or managements decision, It was a BOD desicion. So anyways I am trying to change the agents where it is sending automatic e-mails. Some I have successfully changed but some are getting the error you stated “If you make changes to the Agent, they may be lost because the master copy of this Agent is in a different Design Template Dastabase: See…”

Subject: change in the template, not in the database

Bill, the message you are seeing pretty much means what it says. The design of that database is stored in a template. Often (but not always) this is a file of the same filename but with .ntf on the end. You need to make the design change in the template file, and then refresh the design to the production database.

Are you using any change management software (such as TeamStudio’s Ciao)? If not, be sure that you have a good backup of your notes databases & templates before you begin making changes. That way if the changes get out of control or don’t work as intended, you’ll be able to roll them back.

If you will be the one maintaining Domion on an ongoing basis, you should definitely sign up for some classes as well. Sounds like at least a basic Admin class and a basic developer class are in order, just to help you be confident that you are handling things the right way.

I think I will be the Domino Admin for a while and will take some classes when I can. Thank you for your guidence on this issue. I was a programmer in my past life (10 - 12 years ago) so I can make out the language somewhat. Just need some help moving around and how things interact like you stated. I know we use Teamstudio. I will test a replace or refresh of the template (i know what this is) on a database that is not used much and see what happens. Do I replace or refresh ?

Subject: replace or refresh

Replace is if you are giving it a different template from what it has now. i.e. You were on StdMailR7 and you want it to be StdMailR8.

Refresh is if you want it to pick up changes to the template it already has.
