Deleting attachments doesn´t reduce mail size

Hello all,

i have an annoying problem with attachments since i´ve upgraded to 8.0. I’m used to save attachements somewhere in the filesystem (not really somewhere, but on defined places  ) and then delete the attachment in the email to keep the mail database slim. I use either

  • drag-and-drop the attachment and then delete all attachments

  • save-and-delete all attachements

followed by either save-in-current or save-in-folder (i´m not sure what the exact naming of these functions is, i´m using the german version of the database)

Whenever there are more than one documents and i use save-and-delete-all or delete-all then the attachments are deleted from the email. After saving the email it still keeps the very same size (but not having/showing the attachments anymore).

When i delete the attachments each by each the size of the stored email is reduced accordingly.

  • Have i overlooked any settings?

  • How can i reduce the space occupied by such emails with nonexistent attachments? Have tried the “fixup” tool with no success.

Currently running Client V8.5.1 FP2 on XP / Domino V8.0.1 on W2K server

Thanks in advance

Greetings from Germany

Subject: Compact

Domino databases normally don’t reduce in file size, it will keep the space reserved for deletion stubs etc.

The only way to reduce file size after deleting attachments etc. is to compact the database. Specifically the in place compact, with space recovery with file size reduction.

Subject: The issue is not the mail database but the size of the email shown in the client

Thank you for your hint.

I´ve compacted the mail database with the various options. This worked as expected.

But the size of the single emails, as shown in the client, is not reduced though the attachments are removed. So i end up with various emails >10MB in size but containing only some text and the remarks that the attachments have been removed.

The mail entry as shown in the client doesn´t show the paper clip icon for the attachment. Only the value in the size column is way too big.

Subject: works for me

I just tried it and it works fine for me. Removed a 60K file from e-mail and now e-mail size reads 1K in Inbox folder view.

Subject: Anyone figure this out?

This is a sporadic problem. I have run fixup -F -J and compacted to no avail.

Subject: Message Size Reduction

Does anyone have an answer for this other than forwarding the email to yourself? This is not a consistent issue but occurs enough to be really annoying.
