Delayed Write Failed errors on server accessing databases on a different machine

Hi folks,

Looks like my Domino server has a post-Christmas hangover. I checked it this morning, and found an error with the title:

“Windows - Delayed Write Failed”

and the body

"Windows was unable to save all the data for the file \Device\LanmanRedirector\servername\lotusdominodata$\archive\a_name.nsf. The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere.

What the?

If I OK that error, I get an identical error for another file in the same location. The files are located on a different machine to the Domino server, and I expect that this will have something to do with the problem (We had to move mail archives to a file server due to lack of space on our Domino server).

Now, I’m finding that the server is stuck doing consistency checks on a few databases in that location, and there is at least one that won’t open because of some sort of corruption.

Questions:

  • Is it a common occurance that files on separate machines will cause probems? Should I look to move them back to the domino server?

  • Is there any risk that I will be losing files permanently with these problems? Should I switch off archiving temporarily and delete any links to the files? If so, how do I do this?

  • Any ideas how I can fix this problem?

  • Should I just get drunk on New Year’s Eve and hope the problem has disappeared by then?

I’m leaning towards number 4 at this stage, but I’m hoping this can be fixed without too much carnage.

Any suggestions?

Yes, as a matter of fact, I have.

To be honest, I think that it is likely that the problem is all to do with network issues, and I thought that there might be some Domino Admin types around here who know enough about Domino AND Windows and working with directory links to be able to offer some suggestions to troubleshoot the problem.

My current response has been to disable archiving and delete the directory link, but unless I can squeeze some more storage space out of my IT budget I might have to find a way to actually fix the problem for a change.
