Data Directory Located on File Server

For the last 10 years (or so), we have been running with our Lotus Notes program files installed on the C: drive and the Lotus Notes Data files installed on the user’s Home directory on the File Server.

I know that IBM does not officially support this configuration. In talking with IBM Support, I hear that they will still help with issues, but as part of troubleshooting, might ask us to reinstall the client with the data directory on the local hard drive.

As we migrate our clients from R7.0.3 to R8.0.2, we are re-evaluating this configuration - installing the Data Directory on a file server. The R8 client looks to access more files in the data directory. I realize we can use the Roaming feature. That configuration just seems to be more complex but maybe I need to give it a chance.

I’m looking for any ‘real world’ experience. Does anyone have any suggestions from your experience with this?

Subject: Roaming

Hi

I don’t know how you dont experience some slow downs while using all the data in the file server but I don’t roaming is what you are looking for.

It’s basically for people who logs in several different workstations so they could have their contacts and icons in every location.

If your users don’t swap computers all the time, you’ll just add some files in the server and you’ll get the same files everytime.

Notes 8 uses the registry heavily. If you want to change something in the configuration you might have to change the registry or even reinstall.

I don’t actually know many people using the data folder in the network. I do have some using the Webmail archive in a central location for backup purposes.
