DAOS and Server Side Archiving

DAOS is compelling, and I’m looking for ways to consider bringing in an 8.5 server (when it is released as production). We use Domino’s server side archiving (SSA) to keep down the size of our email. So, I’d like to make sure that I have a good understanding for the strength of DAOS.

  1. If a mail server was DAOS enabled, and the archive is DAOS enabled, will the archive transfer work to keep the relationship identical on the archive server ?

  2. Is it possible to have a non-DAOS enable mail server and a DAOS enabled archive server ? So that as documents are transferred to the archive server, the DAOS would be built.

Thanks !!

  2. Is it possible to have a non-DAOS enable mail server and a DAOS enabled archive server ? So that as documents are transferred to the archive server, the DAOS would be built. absolutely.

We hope to do a Lotusphere session on the effective use of DAOS and discuss exactly these types of scenarios. If you are a Lotusphere attendee you should look for this session (assuming our abstract is accepted)

Thanks !!

Subject: Terrific News !!! Thanks !

Gary, I also hope to have a Lotusphere session accepted. So here’s hoping that both our sessions are accepted, but scheduled for different times. Server-side archiving has been a huge plus. Being able to upgrade the archive servers to 8.5 for DAOS will be a much easier sell, if we can verify it does what you describe.

Now, we have to wait on the production release of 8.5.

Thanks, Gary, this was very needed information.

Subject: Lialis Notes email archive solution

I would like to invite you to have a look at this solution.

The solution

The Lialis email archiving solution archives the emails in your environment as you demand. Once configured, the selection of the emails to be archived runs automatically. You can determine which emails will be archived by the solution, for example emails older than 100 days.

How does the solution work?

The archived emails turn up on the normal Lotus Domino-server, on which the Lialis archive solution is installed. This central email archiving solution manage the entire archiving process. The main advantage of the Lialis solution is that employees have access to their archived email messages as easy as before, while the emails remain visible in their mail file folders. Via a link there is an invisible connection between the mail file and the archive database.

Find information

The archive solution has an special search functionality. This functionality searches both archived and not archived email messages. Therefore users don’t notice what happens in the background. The solution can be used for both personal as general email databases.

Houskeeping makes sure the archive database does not grow larger than a for example 5 GB.

Pricing of this tool lies between 5 and 8 euro per Notes database (pricing 2009)

Subject: My Understanding: If I got you right it should be 2 times yes.

First of all it does not really take long to to install VMWare Server, 2 times domino and test what you ask.

From what I was told (I did not test)

DAOS is enabled or not enabled on the database level. IF enabled, the attachment is identified, and in whatever other database it does exist, too, identified properly, too.

1 + 2.

DAOS happens on a level so far down, that there is no need to take care of it e.g. in a lotus script agent or for the replicator (or journaling).

  1. A lokal replica (Notebook) is never DAOS enabled, even if the server copy is. Don’t see a reason why some other server would not be able to work the same way - and don’t see a reason, why one would not go for it the whole way, once you are involved with its handling.

  2. The question you did not ask: Once the last document with a reference of the attachment is deleted, the File stays for some time (a few weeks) on the servers harddrive. => many restore scenarios will not need to restore the file itself, as it is most likely still there.

As allready said, I did not really test anything, yet, but I sure love the concept!
