A few 8.x features I’ll mention off top of my head:
Out-of-Office Service is one that comes to mind… You’ll want all cluster mates in a mail cluster to be at 8.x before enabling… 7.x Servers do not have the service…
Message Recall is another feature that requires Notes 8 Client and Notes 8 Server so you’ll want all mail servers in a cluster to be at 8.x before utilizing that feature,

Thanks, I am not converting any mail users yet to 8.5 I am first moving all user to the new server and upgrading the client 98% done, then I will upgrade the mail template. I wasn’t 100% sure about 8.5 & 7 clustering…

Domino clustering is version agnostic. No issues that I am aware of.
