Client prompts for password to access ID file

One of my users is being prompted to enter his Notes password to access the ID file before he can use the Notes client. I know there is the option in the Security Preferences to “Don’t prompt for a password” but this is already checked in his security preferences. Does anyone know why this password prompt is still being triggered? Is the security preference held locally in the notes.ini or is it enabled in the ID file? If the user has multiple PC’s using the same ID and ini file could that also cause an issue?

TIA

The ‘Don’t prompt for password’ option is for 3rd party applications that hook into the Notes client. When you select this option the 3rd party applications can operate without being prompted for a password for the Notes ID file.

To remove the requirement for a Notes password when using the Notes client you actually need to clear the password from the ID file:

  • Select ‘File → Security → User Security’ from the Notes client menu.

  • Type in the current password for the ID file when prompted.

  • Click the ‘Change Password’ option

  • Type in the current password again for the ID file when prompted.

  • Leave the password blank

Passwords are stored in the Notes ID file itself so if a user has their id file on multiple machines they’ll need to clear the password in each copy of the file.

Note that when the user was registered (and the id file created) the administrator specified the minimum length of passwords required and complexity of passwords. Depending on the settings the administrator specified you may not be able to clear the passwords from the id file. The administrator will have to created the id file with the password set to ‘Optional’.

Thanks for that I will check the users config.

I did another test - I noticed the user had the option in the Proxy Settings (in the Location document) set to use a Password for login - I removed this and the prompt no longer appears. So in this case the password prompt seems to be linked to having a user name and password entered in the Proxy Settings dialog box…

not sure what will be effected by removing these details but the user tested and he can still access internet sites from within his Notes client…

Strange…

… but if your entered password “unlocks” valid content, the password is valid.
