We’re currently using Lotus Notes to host a contract database. Statements of Work are created based on contracts that are approved making the contract the parent record and the SOW, the child record. In the functionality, when editing the SOW, the contract number is grayed out because it’s my understanding that you can’t change the parent record from the child record.
I am hoping that it is indeed possible to change a parent record from a child record. Any thoughts on that?
Thanks,
Jim

Jim,
Yes can update the parent from the child, however unless you have document locking or something like that, there is nothing stopping two people from updating the parent document, thus you may get a replication conflict.

I have a system that works like that. On the child form, I have a hidden field called “ValidateKeyDocs” which has a rather complicated formula that I’ve given in full below for your information, but the key bit is something that will look like:
"@If (; @SetDocField($Ref; ; ); <else action, if any>)
Hope this helps.
Helen.
My field validation formula:
@If (!@IsDocBeingSaved; @Return(@Success);“”);
@If (!@Contains(@Implode (DocumentType); “B.1”: “B.2”: “B.3”: “C. A”: “E.1”: “N.1”: “N.3”); @Return(@Success); “”);
doctype := @Implode (DocumentType);
phase := @If (DesignPhase = “Provisional”; “Prov”; @Text (DesignPhase));
type := @If (@Contains(doctype; “B.1”); “Design” + phase; @Contains(doctype; “B.2”); “AsPlan”; @Contains(doctype; “B.3”); “AsReport”; @Contains(doctype; “E.1”); “Baseline”; @Contains(doctype; “C.”); “Plans”; @Contains(doctype; “N.1”); “Eval”; @Contains(doctype; “N.3”); “TDI”; “”);
fld := “KD” + type;
fldcont := @If (@Contains (doctype; “C.”: “N.1”: “N.3”); @GetDocField ($Ref; fld); “”);
@If (@Contains (doctype; “B.1”: “B.2”: “B.3”: “E.1”); @SetDocField($Ref; fld; “Y”);
(@Contains (doctype; “C.”: “N.1”: “N.3”) & fldcont = “”); @SetDocField($Ref; fld; @Text (Year));
(@Contains (doctype; “C.”: “N.1”: “N.3”) & @Contains (fldcont; @Text (Year))); “”;
@Contains (doctype; “C.”: “N.1”: “N.3”); @SetDocField($Ref; fld; fldcont + " " + @Text(Year)); “”);
@Success

Helen and John,
Thanks for the responses. After describing the new development pieces and intergrity risks that you each responded with, I think my user will stick with the current functionality. Thanks for the lessons.
