Carbon Copy, which is the older English acronym for CopyTo. Back in the days of typewriters, if you wanted to make a copy for a second or more people, you would slip carbon paper between two sheets of paper (or sometimes two sheets between three sheets of paper) and type the letter. The carbon copy would then go to the CopyTo person. On the letter, it was considered proper to say:
To: Joe Schmoe
CC: Larry Barrymore
to let everyone know who it was copied to. Of course, if you didn’t, it becamse a BlindCopyTo (or BCC).
Anyway, CC: Mail just indicates that a copy goes to “mail” or e-mail, as I understand the origin of the name.
