After a system hangup and reboot… whenever I try to login to Lotus Notes 6.5 a text box with the text message “File Already Exists” pops up with an “OK” button. Clicking “OK” causes Lotus Notes to close immediately.
My system is a Thinkpad running Windows XP Professional.
Can anyone please tell me how to fix this problem… since my IT depart can’t seem to help me!!

There is a little application call killnotes.exe in the Sandbox (look down the right side of this page) that will close all of the Notes program files that get left open in a crash.

Thanks for the response… I tried your suggestion and ran the killnotes.exe application but it found no files to kill.
I did try removing the desltop6.ndk file (as suggested by another responder). This allowed the Lotus Notes application to run up to the point of requesting a replication before it through up the “File Already Exists” text box.

First guess: Once you have your Notes client terminated/crashed, check in your Notes data directory for files starting with “~”. Delete those. Then retry.
If that doesn’t help, rename desktop6.ndk to, say desktop6.backup, and restart.
If neither of those two tips helped, you might have some files read only which shouldn’t be - all .nsf and .ntf need to be read/write, as well as notes.ini.

At our company, this often is due to a full drive – for example, my notes profile is on an allocated portion of a shared drive. If my portion of the shared drive is used up, this error can result.

I had exactly the same issue and I found it was do to a duplicate notes.ini file which had not been configured by Notes. This occured after re-installing Lotus Notes.

I ran across the same error this morning. I deleted the cache.ndk and renamed the bookmark.nsf. Notes started normally. Hope this helps you, if not already resolved.
