BTSTAC~1.exe requesting Notes password

Hi,

Since we’re rolling out our new laptops with bluetooth onboard we received several calls from our users because they were concerned about the Notes-password prompt.

When Notes is launched, a Dos-window appears and prompts for the Notes password.

The application calling this window is ‘BTSTACKSERVER.exe’ and is shown in the DOs-Box as BTSTACK~1.exe.

Once entered the password, the box disappears.

I found a workaround:

In Security options switch on → “don’t prompt for a password for other Notes-based programs”

however, I still wonder why this prompt was there in the first place?

What does the bluetooth has to do with Notes and what exactly is happening in the background to require this password?

Anyone has some answers?

Thanks in advance,

Steve

Just by chance I found a similar thread on the LavaTech forum; probably it can help you:

esp. see the last response (as of today) from someone called Mats Persson, dated 02/27/2004.

Good luck,

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

I checked the thread on the LavaTech forum and downloaded the driver as described there.

Installing the driver indeed upgraded my driver for bluetooth device but did not solve the password prompt.

If this driver would have been a solution we could draw the conclusion this was a bug.

However since it didn’t solve the problem, we cannot draw that conclusion.

Even when it would have been solved by doing this, it still doesn’t explain why this prompt popped up in the first place.

It’s also weird that Lotus/IBM doesn’t know why the bluetooth device needs access to your ID-file.

The question remains: what does bluetooth has to do with Lotus Notes?

In none of the connection/location documents a bluetooth connection is specified.

In fact, none of the settings were changed after moving to a bluetooth enabled machine.

How can we find out why this bluetooth is requesting a connection using the Notes ID?

To what is it connecting? Why is it connecting?

Any hints/tips are very welcome.

Thanks in advance,

Steve

obviously some Bluetooth driven service is trying to access your Notes PIM data, i.e. your personal address book and/or your Notes calendar. I installed a bluetooth USB stick in my notebook the other day and later on realized that I now had an entry “bluetooth” below Notes’ actions menu if a certain kind of content was active in Notes (e.g. a calendar view).Since Notes supports SynCML synchronisation of PIM data it is possible to synch calendars, address books etc. between other bluetooth driven devices and your Notes setup.

What I find strange is that the service - whatever it is - is trying to connect to Notes all by itself. At my setup I have SyncML connections to Notes explicitly enabled, and still the service is NOT trying to connect without me telling it to do so.

What I would do was look into the services list and check for anything that sounds like bluetooth, SyncML, PIM or similar, see what it does, and if it helps to set the startup mode to “manual” (assuming these are windows machines).

Apart from that I don’t have a clue…

Good luck,

Hi Lothar

What do you mean “notes supports SyncML”. Is there SyncML support built into Domino or what?

I have searched for info about SyncML support but haven’t been able to find any info about this (I also posted question on the Beta forum since they had promised SyncML functionality vor version 6).

Just wanted to add that my company has two laptops which experience the same problem. Interestingly both have PDA sync software installed. Does not seem to matter if they are on the network or not. Only way to get Notes up is to kill the Btstack~1 task before trying to load it.

Come on IBM/Lotus. If Dell can solve the problem (see earlier posting) so should you!

Just installed Service Pack 2 for XP to my laptop. Interestingly there does not seem to be any need to shut down the BTSTAC~1 process any more before loading Notes. Problem seems to have been solved by Microsoft. Should have known it was their fault in the first place!
