Hi! I have two clustered Domino Servers 6.5.4FP2 running on RHEL 3. Our company just recently availed of Blackberry Internet Service for the Execs and I set-up mail on the blackberry devices via POP3. Problem is that messages are being received multiple times on the BB devices. I also set up connection to GMAIL/HOTMAIL/YAHOO via POP3 and there was no problem. Is there any settings for Domino POP3 / notes.ini that can resolve the issue? Or any configuration? thanks.

Try the below. HTH

You are running Desktop Redirector, which is included in the BlackBerry Desktop Software, but you are using the BlackBerry Internet Service email account.
Resolution
Remove Desktop Redirector service book from the handheld, and modify the installation of BlackBerry Desktop Manager to prevent the service book from returning.
To remove the service book from the device
On the device, click Options, then click Service Book.
Highlight Desktop [CMIME], click the trackwheel, and select Delete from the menu.
To modify the installation of BlackBerry Desktop Manager versions 3.5 and earlier
Close Desktop Manager.
In Add/Remove Programs, choose BlackBerry Desktop Software, and click Change/Remove.
When the installation program appears, click Modify.
Choose one of the following installation options:
Integrate with a BlackBerry Enterprise Server email account
Integrate with new or existing ISP account
Complete the installation.
To modify the installation of BlackBerry Desktop Manager 3.6 Service Pack 1 and later
Close Desktop Manager.
In Add/Remove Programs, choose BlackBerry Desktop Software 3.6, and then click Change/Remove.
When the installation program appears, click Modify.
On the Email Integration Option screen, select BlackBerry Web Client.
Click Next.
Complete the installation.
Cause 5
You forward messages through your BlackBerry Internet Service account, and also have a BlackBerry Enterprise Server email account integrated on your BlackBerry Internet Service account.
Resolution
Use either the BlackBerry Enterprise Server or the BlackBerry Internet Service account.

I have also forwarded the case to RIM and below is their response:
"When the BlackBerry Internet Service checks for new messages from an integrated account, it compares the values of the message IDs (henceforth referred to as UIDs) of each message present in the account with the list of UIDs it obtained during the previous polling cycle. If there is a message with a UID that has not been seen before, it is interpreted as a new message, and thus delivered to the handheld.
However, if the UID of a message changes, the BlackBerry Internet Service will assume this is a new message and deliver it to the handheld, even if it has already been delivered. This would result in seeing a duplicate on the handheld.
We believe this is exactly what is occurring in this situation to our users. To clarify, I would like to provide you with a partial listing of the UIDs we saw when we logged into the account

5 CDC355ADE5A18EC3482571ED000DA7DE
…
We can see that messages marked with <----, <<<<<<, and =-=-=-=-=- are currently at the top of the mailbox. At this point, we sent a test message to username@companydomain.com, and immediately logged into the account once again. This time, we saw this listing of UIDs:
1 443F72D8CFDD8F48482571ED000D33A6
2 D72811261307BF13482571ED000D420E <--------

5 21CFB32A34D3A36A482571ED000DA236
…
As you can see, the marked messages are now not at the top of the
mailbox: a new message has appeared. Since the UIDs assigned to a message are dependent on their position in the mailbox, these messages would now have different UIDs. When the BlackBerry Internet Service checks for new messages, it will see these differing UIDs, interpret these messages as new mail, and bring them over to the handheld, even though they have already been delivered previously. This is what is causing the duplication of messages on the handheld from these accounts."
I am confused as to the reply I got from RIM. If I understood it correctly, everytime new messages are received on the integrated account, all the messages, including those that are already received by the handheld, will again be delivered to the handheld, causing the multiple reception of e-mails. Is this problem only unique for domino mail servers? Any suggestions on how to resolve this? thanks again…
Subject: RE: Blackberry via POP3 - messages are being received multiple times
I am running Domino 7.0.1 on an iSeries v5r3.All devices use the Blackberry Internet Service to pass email to and from the device.
The Blackberry devices that poll the server via POP3 are only the new 8703e from Cingular or Verizon. I have 14 other older Blackberry devices model 7250 does not have this problem.
I setup a new 8703e today and it appears that Verizon made changes on the setup of the Blackberry internet service. Appears to do a reverse on the mail address and then sets up the pop3 server name automatically now.
I will keep my eyes on this to see if any improvements are made and pass along the info.
Peace
Subject: Also worth mentioning …
- The good folks at RIM recently revamped their pricing structure, and you can now install a BES free - which would give you far better results on a Blackberry than POP3.
Check here:
- More good folks, this time over at Martin Scott, have a great little utility called “Wireless Mail” that allows you to sync your Notes Mail with an ISP’s mail, which you can then pick up with a BlackBerry or Treo.
Check out Martin Scott Consulting | WirelessMail Overview
Either of those two options will be far better than trying POP3 …

PS: Hi Michael!
Subject: Blackberry via POP3 - messages are being received multiple times
I have a similar experience with wireless devices receiving multiple copies of e-mail from Domino via POP3. The desktop redirector is not installed and is not a part of this discussion, and it’s not just Blackberry, Treo phones do it also. I did some Internet research on the problem and came to the conclusion that POP3 works best to retrieve mail from a server, when a copy of mail is left on the server for the Notes client then POP3’s job of tracking unread messages becomes much harder and is prone to error. The phone or Blackberry service that mistakenly retrieves the same message more than once is likely to keep retrieving the same message every time it checks in until that message is read or deleted by the Notes client. I’m assuming that our Blackberry e-mail problem will go away when we get a BES Server, but at this time I’m not aware of a solution for multiple copies of e-mail being retrieved by generic POP3 phones. Anyone know more about this?
Also,
If you look at the POP3 session log of the Blackberry service hitting your Domino server you will see that every e-mail in your inbox, read or unread, is referenced every time the POP3 session runs, that’s a scary amount of data and bandwidth just to check for new mail. In the interest of efficiency and reliability you should keep the number of messages in the inbox to a bare minimum and the number of unread messages near zero.
