Blackberry Sync with R6.5.1

Has anyone gotten the latest version (Release 2) of the Blackberry Desktop Manager (w/Intellisync) to work with Notes 6.5.1? This release was supposed to include support for Notes 6.5, but I haven’t been able to access the option to synchronize with any version of Notes. I tried the work-around posted on this forum, but it didn’t work. Perhaps because I’m on Release 2 of the Blackberry Desktop Manager?

Blackberry Desktop Manager v3.6.2.9 (Jan 19 2004)

Lotus Notes v6.5.1.

Anyone have any suggestions? I hate to think my alternative is to use a MS product for calendaring and scheduling…

Thanks in advance.

Subject: Blackberry Sync with R6.5.1. - Solved

I spent several hours on technical support with RIM and was able to solve this problem. Unfortunately the solution was just a trial-and-error process. After much troubleshooting we finally managed to get the synch working by performing the following steps:

  • We completely removed the Blackberry Desktop software, cleared out all traces of the program on the hard disk and in the Windows Registry.

  • We added the Notes and Notes/Data folders to the computer’s PATH statement.

  • We reinstalled the Blackberry Desktop Software.

Hope that saves someone the trouble of spending three hours of tech support with RIM!

We have it running. What troubles are you having?

Subject: RE: Blackberry Sync with R6.5.1.

I can’t configure the Blackberry Desktop Manager to sync with Lotus Notes; the OK button is not accessible (greyed out) when I select the Notes 5.0/6.0 translator.

My client is not installed in the standard \Lotus\Notes folder… but surely the software is checking the registry for valid applications for synchronization.

Any thoughts?

I think i remember that this issue is tied to a DLL. Let me look back through my Notes and I will try to post the fix we used and the processes that we currently have in place.

Subject: RE: Blackberry Sync with R6.5.1.

There was a workaround posted that involved using the R5 version of the nstrings.dll file. I didn’t have any luck with that.

If you have, please let me know exactly what version of the Blackberry Desktop Manager you’re using. Perhaps I need to move backwards in order to utilize that workaround.

Thanks.

Subject: service pack 2 works with 6.5.1. ensure that the desktop knows where to find the notes.ini since you aren’t using a standard installation. prior to this release the following worked

Subject: Thanks, but no luck

Aside from my environment settings which specify Notes in my path (as much as that’s used anymore), there aren’t any configuration settings in the Blackberry Desktop Manager to specify this. However, I made copies of my notes.ini and dropped them in the root, windows, and Blackberry Desktop Manager folders… still no luck with setting this up to sync with Notes.

I tried the fix using nstrings.dll also, and was unable to get that to work as well. I find it hard to believe that their software requires a Notes install in a specific folder but that’s what I’m starting to suspect.

Subject: There are settings in the Desktop Manager. Ensure you have the 6.5.1 nstrings.dll (maybe you replaced it prior).

go to Redirector settings on the Advanced tab and ensure you are pointing to the correct notes.ini and blackberry server. if you have multiple notes.ini delete them all except the proper one in the notes directory.

then configure IntelliSync as follows…

BTW…this won’t be need when Release 4 comes out this fall/winter. No desktop needed!! :-).

Subject: Neither specifying Notes INI nor the nstrings.dll replace is working for me

I’m having the same problem on three out of four Notes 6.0 client machines. As with other users, I’m finding that the Notes 5.0/6.0 Translator in the IntelliSync component of BDM is grayed out.

Things that are consistent across all four machines:

All using BDM 3.6.2.9 (this is Service Pack 2)

All users are Roaming users.

BES for Domino 2.2 SP3a

All users started off with 6.0.1 CF1 clients.

Things that are different on the one working machine:

It was set up with a single user Notes 6.0.1 CF1 installation. (The other users were set up with multi-user installations).

Things I’ve tried to fix this problem:

I’ve downloaded and applied BDM 3.6 SP2 – no improvement as it turned out that this was the version alreadyu installed.

I’ve tried the nstrings.dll fix noted elsewhere (even though this was specifically for 6.5 clients using pre-SP2 versions of BDM) – no change.

I’ve tried specifying the Notes.ini file in the Redirector Adavnced settings – no change.

I’ve tried removing all other Notes.ini files on the machine (with the exception of the stub notes.ini that is used for the multi-user client setup process) – no joy.

I’ve tried completely unbinstalling Notes 6.0.1 CF1 Multi-User and installing 6.0.3 Single User instead. (New setup using roaming files) No change.

So does anyone have any other things to try, other than wait for BES 4?

All suggestions gratefully received,

Subject: Looks like Notes.ini must be in program directory

So I have fixed it on some of these machines now by putting a copy of Notes.ini in C:\Lotus\Notes (even though I have specified a location with Redirector’s advanced settings).

This coding seems too poor to be believed. Seems like a very familiar bug from earlier IntelliSync releases. Presumably, this is PumaTech’s responsibility. Seems like they have been coding Notes connector’s for long enough that they should have trapped this one. But it does confirm their low reputation.
