Black Screen and Server Unresponsive

Has anyone experienced their Domino server becoming unresponsive (unable to ping or get to the console)? We see this type of outage once a month. The strange thing is, Domino does not create an NSD or log anything in the log.nsf, there aren’t any event or sys logs and the console is just a black screen. We have to reboot the server, then all is well and the server is stable again for another month or so. What’s even more disturbing is that at least one other server, maybe two, usually stop responding at the same time with the same symptoms. We’ve ruled out dependencies with other software and can’t seem to find any replicas (admin4.nsf, names.nsf) that are replicating at the same time of the outage. We’re runnning GroupShield anti-virus software, SAN enviornment, 6.5.4 FP1 on W2003

Check out the windows properties the Domino server console runs in. Make sure “quick edit” is DISABLED.

This will cause the server to pause and present the symptoms you describe. This can be validated if, when diagnosing the issue, you select “ENTER” at the console and there is an immediate scrolling of information.

(damn windoze)

If “quick edit” is disabled, then it may be something else which may be diagnosed by enabling console logging and reviewing the text output files for what was occurring at the time the server became unresponsive.

Thanks. We had the “Quick Insert Mode” enabled, so I disabled it. I’ll keep an eye on it and try the “enter” thing to see if I can get any response.

The wierd thing is, I don’t know if the the console is actually frozen - I can’t even get to the console when this happens - the screen is totally black - like the monitor is not even turned on…and it happens to 2-3 servers at the same time.
