Backup server and database

Hi,I am new to Lotus Notes and Domino.

We have recently installed a Windows 2000 server with Lotus Notes. The server has a DLT drive and Yosemite Tapeware backup software.

I make a full backup with the Domino server running, will this be a valid backup?

If not, how can I get a valid backup?

The main issue that defines whether backup software can successfully back up a running Domino server is whether it can back up open files, since all the most important things to back up are databases that Domino keeps open file locks on. If Yosemite can do that, then it should do a good job of backing up Domino. If not, you have two options:

  1. Buy something else; search this forum and you’ll find people asking and answering recommendations for backup s/w.

  2. Set up a “backup server” which users won’t know exists (put it in another named network and they’ll probably never see it), replicate everything you want to back up to this server, and then shut it down to back it up.

Hi,

Backup is one of the most important tasks an admimistrator should do. The best option for you to check a backup is restore a few databases, for example names.nsf & log.nsf.

If you can restore them, your system is backed up. First of all restore the databases in a different directory, then move them to a new “temp” directory under data. The ntry to open this databases from a client WS.

The idea of create a “backup server” and replicate important databases to there, it isn’t a good idea… if you have problem with replications, your backup will be problematic, and you even don’t know. I had bad experiences with replication problems the log didn’t reported, and you will discover this in a very bad day, where your main server is crashed, with databases corrupted, and inaccessible data.

So again, take some time to check your actual backup system, double check it, and just to be sure, check it again…

I hope this helps,

Daniel
