Avoid click activation for third-party applets in Domino running on IE6 with Windows XP sp2

We noticed that with the migration of PC’s to Windows XP sp2, the behavior of web applications using applets has changed. Users have to click manually on the applet to activate first, then they may interact with it. This is related to the Microsoft IE ActiveX update KB912945.

This is also the case for Domino applications on the web:

  • for pages using design elements with applets, e.g. buttons in action bar. It seems this issue is addressed in 6.5.5 FP1

  • for third-party applets loaded directly from the web.

The question is how to address this situation with the third-party applets?

Currently, the applet files are stored on the home directory of the Domino server.

In the pages, we’re using computed for display fields with following code:

…

It seems that the workaround is use JavaScript to load the applet from an external file.

Would appreciate any recommendation on how to proceed.

Thank you
