I am currently trying to come up with a system to automate a powerpoint presentation with information from a view in lotus notes, i was thinking about embedding the presentation or maybe exporting the values to excel.
Does anybody have any ideas/information on what’s a good way to achieve this, and how to set it up.
thanks in advance.
Subject: Automated PPT presentation
Posts on exporting view entries to excel is very abundant at this side of the internet, (you might want to search the Notes 4 and 5 forum if you don’t find anything helpful here.)
What you need are:
-
A good command of LS,
-
You know how to record macros, and
-
You know VBA, (which is really a lot like VB.)
These following lines of code should help you get started though. It writes “1234” at cell B7 on a new Workbook:
Dim xl as variant
Set xl = CreateObject( “Excel.Application” )
xl.Workbooks.Add
xl.Range(“B7”).FormulaR1C1 = “1234”
If you compare it with a similar code you get when you record a macro after performing the same process manually, you’ll see that the similarities of the VBA with the LS code above.
Using Powerpoint is pretty much just the same banana really.
Hope that helps.

Thanks for the info on how to peel it, also i’d like to know what the pros/cons for each the excel approach and embedding powerpoint are.
Like difficulty in setting it up/ end-using it, would the server need office if i’m embedding powerpoint.
Still in documention phase of my school project, but i need to document a few different ways of approaching the problem and then decide on the best one and create it.
Thanks in advance.

i didn’t understand exactly what particular topics you want to know the pros and cons of. the way i understood it, you want to know that of the using excel in LN vs embedding excel worksheets in powerpoint.
sounds like something that don’t really clash if you ask me so i might as well clarify it right off the bat.

What i wanted to do with Excel was export the data to a non embedded sheet, and with powerpoint i wanted to embed the presentation into lotus.
Would i get a problem with the server if i embed an office file.

it depends on how you embed your office data. you can embed it as an attachment or as an object. with the former, i think that the overhead is smaller than having it attached as an object in an RTF. the disadvantage with embedding it as an object is that users would just see an icon on the rtf when the document is opened as opposed to having the users see the contents right away when it is embedded as an object.
regardless of the how it is embedded in the RTF, keep in mind that the more embedded objects in more documents you have, the more DB space you must allot. if you intend to clutter your DB with files, you might want to consider using DomDoc.
