Subject: Here’s Some Technotes…
Hi Adam,
I’ve seen this issue in the past as well, but Encryption has always been one of those things that I only partially understand!
I included 2 Technotes from IBM’s Knowledgebase below that touch upon this error - I hope they help!
Regards,

Product:

Problem
When Lotus Notes® users open an e-mail that contains recovery information and click the action ‘Accept Recovery Information’, they get a dialog box that says:
“Attempted encryption operation is not supported by this version of Notes”.
To reproduce the issue:
-
Register an administrator with 2048 key strength and add this administrator to the ‘Edit Master Recovery Authority List’.
-
Click the ‘Export’ button and select a user to mail ID recovery information.
-
Have the user open the e-mail that contains recovery information and select the action ‘Accept Recovery Information’ and type their password. The user will receive a dialog box with the error message.
This error is received because there is an Administrator in the Master Recovery Authority List that has a key strength of 2048. The error is removed once you remove any ID that has a key strength of 2048 from the list.
This issue has been reported to Quality Engineering as SPR# DSAS7GTKYX; however, it was determined not to be a software problem. Notes is functioning as designed for backward compatibility. An enhancement request for this functionality has been submitted as SPR# DSAS7H2QW9 for a future release.
