Attachment showing as text within email

When my users receive email with an attachment from one person outside of our organization the attachment appears as text within the email. The attachment was created in Word. The text appearing in the email shows with all of the formating codes. (example: Roman;}{\f2\fmodern\fcharset0\fprq1{*\panose 02070309020205020404}Courier New;}) Anyone else he sends the email to outside our organization receives the attachment as it should be. I also receive the attachment fine, but I’m also administrator. Any ideas???

I ran into a similar problem, but even more random, a couple of years ago. It turned out to be the Cisco PIX firewall was randomly corrupting attachments and they would come through as part of the email instead of a proper attachment. The fix was to tell the PIX to route requests for port 25 to the Notes server, but NOT to set that server as an SMTP server in the routing table for the PIX. For some reason, the IOS had some kind of bug in it that would only corrupt the attachments when it was configured to be forwarding the message to a SMTP server, very strange, and it took us months to figure it out.

Your problem doesn’t sound exactly like ours, but if it is only from one particular sender then they must have something configured incorrectly on their end. Do you know what software they are using? You need to perform the standard “determine the weak link in the chain” procedure by having them also send to an outside account, then forward that message to your internal mail, see if that messes up. Good Luck!
