Attachment forwarding

Hi,I have a user that has 2 locations setup for 2 different mail boxes on her Notes 6.5.1.

She can send attachments that she attaches to a new email she creates herself, but cannot forward attachments that are sent to her, it shows up as only an icon in the email, and doesn’t open. this happens in both locations. She has plenty of space in her mailfile, and is under quote in the secondary mailfile, neither of them can forward attachments. preferences are set to “keep in sender’s format”

Any ideas?

thanks

Title: Two Nlnotes Processes Are Shown Running and Attachments Are Sent as Graphics After Close and Re-launch Notes

Product: Lotus Domino > Lotus Domino Server > Version 6.x

Platform(s): Windows

Date: 12.04.2005

Doc Number: 1115244

Problem

If you close a Lotus Notes 6.x client and then immediately re-launch it, Microsoft Windows Task Manager shows two Nlnotes processes running. When this condition occurs, if you send an e-mail message with an attachment, the actual file is not included with the message. Instead, only a graphic (technically, a picture) of the icon for the file is sent with the message. This problem may be more common when you forward a mail with an attachment.

Typical steps that reproduce the problem:

  1. Launch the Notes client and send a message with a fairly large attachment (~15 MB).

  2. Close the Notes client and then launch it immediately (within approximately 5 seconds).

  3. Check the Windows Task Manager; you see two Nlnotes processes running.

  4. If you now attempt to forward or reply to a message with an attachment, a picture of the icon is received instead of the file attachment.

Solution

This issue has been reported to Quality Engineering as SPR# JPIK5TLT8R and HTAA5QNARN and has been addressed in Domino 6.0.5 and 6.5.4.

Excerpt from the Lotus Notes and Domino Release 6.0.5 / 6.5.4 MR fix list (available at IBM Developer):

Editor

SPR# HTAA5QNARN - When forwarding a mail message which included an attachment, the file was not attached. Only the icon was inserted. This occurred when the file ~editclp.ncf, located in the temporary folder, was locked.

Attachments

SPR# JPIK5TLT8R - Fixed a problem when an attachment’s images were forwarded, instead of the complete attachments, with the mail message.

To work around the issue in previous releases, close the Notes client, and wait 20 to 50 seconds before restarting it. This wait clears a temporary file named ~editclp.ncf, thus allowing you to forward attachments without problem.

If the attachments issue continues, close any launched attachments that are still open in their associated applications. If that does not correct the problem, close the Notes client, search your system for the file ~editclp.ncf, and then delete the file.

The file ~editclp.ncf is a temporary file that Notes uses when working with attachments. In certain cases, this file is not deleted as it should be and therefore gets locked. Because the file is locked, Notes cannot use it again to complete the attachment process.

For similar symptoms with a Notes R5 client, refer to “Launched Attachments: Temporary Files Are Not Deleted After Exiting the Notes Client” (#1100416 ).

Thanks for your posting! The work-around worked perfectly. I will try out the 6.5.4 patch on the user experiencing this problem to see if it’s a permanent solution.

As an addition, I had a client running Citrix and Powerfuse. After quite some time fighting the attachment issue, it turned out the TEMP environment Notes uses (it does NOT use TMP) was pointing to a local drive on the citrix server, aka, all users shared the same TEMP folder. Now, don’t try to convince me this was a bad idea; it was! Basically it was a configuration error of the environment and the attachment problem was simply the first to emerge big time. The reasoning for using the citrix server harddisk itself wasn’t that bad: don’t use the network for temp files. Of course the solution was to add the username to the TEMP mapping.

An attachment of any file type?

it seems that way, we’ve tried word docs and pdf’s…they open fine when she first attaches them, but when she receives this in an email and then forwards it, they don’t open…

We sometimes have the same behavior involving RightFax.

Rightfax sends an email containing the fax as a TIF attachemnt to a specific mailfile, used expressly for faxes. The mailfile and attachment are opened so the fax can be read and forwarded. When the recipient gets the email that is supposed to contian the fax as a TIF attachment, there is an embedded picture of the TIF attachment, but no attachment.

Subject: RE: attachment forwarding

we don’t have Right fax, so our issue is a bit different…does anyone have any other ideas why attachments are not forwarding properly?

thanks
