A client has suddenly noticed that when she uses her arrow keys to navigate through her mail file, as each unread email is selected by using the arrow keys, the unread mails are being marked “read” without her ever opening them. Is there some shortcut that turns this function off/on? I appreciate your help.

It’s a stab in the dark, but does she have the preview pane open, even a tiny bit?
If so, close the preview pane or there’s a Tools\Preferences\User Preferences setting Mark documents read when opening in the Preview pane - uncheck this.
