Anti SPAM

Hi,

If got a problem. I want to fight the spam on my server but, the Blacklist tool in Domino doesn’t work for me.

I recieve my mail from a large mailbox which is located at my ISP. (It’s a safety because of several power outages etc.) The problem is that al my mail comes to me by 3 ip-adresses all belonging to my ISP and he is (happily) not blacklisted.

So spam is also comming in through those IP-adresses, and the blacklist tool doesn’t look further than thet SMTP ip-adres which is sending the mail. (Goodbye tool)

Is there someone who knows how to act on this? Or who had the same problem but solved it.

Please let me know. It would solve a lot of irritation

Thanks.

If any of the “received” fields are being preserved then you could use MIMEShield. It would review all of the Received fields and run black list checks on all external IPs and quarantine them as necessary.

That spammers lie. Or rather their SMTP servers lie about who they are. So the only information you have to go on is the IP address that they’re coming in from. Which, of course, is only known (and validated) at connection time. The IP address is then checked against the various “blackhole” lists.

This is why the Domino anti-spam stuff isnt doing what you want it to do. By the time you’ve got it, the spammer has been and gone. And probably moved IP address to somewhere new.

So - what you could do is:

  1. Ask, your ISP to filer spam out of your mail.

or

  1. Run your incoming mail via some spam filtering service such as spamcop

or

  1. Point the incoming SMTP feed directly at your domino server (which will make the spam work, sure - but you lose your backup)…

Which is the most relevant/simple/cost effective for your situation ?

If you’re still watching this post and haven’t come up with a workaround for your issue, maybe you can use this method.

You set up multiple MX records. putting say MX =10 for your Domino server, and MX=20 for your backup isp server. This will allow you to have blacklisting most of the time and a non-blacklisted backup in case your server is unreachable.

Not the best solution but it’s better than nothing.
