Anti spam solutions

We are running Domino 6.5.4 at La Salle University and I was wondering what others were using for their anti spam solutions. Being in higher education, we are looking for a cost effective solution of course. On the other hand, we have been getting hammered with spam. We are currently using spamJam (Granite Software). We also like to integrate our solution with Domino. Any feedback???

Subject: SpamSentinel

We’ve been using SpamSentinel from Mayflower Software (www.maysoft.com). It’s a Notes-based solution, and results have been good. I give them high marks on their customer service - very responsive.

Set up was easy, and it offers a good solution for the Notes Admin and/or developer.

On the downside, the software needs a dedicated server to be most effective. During the recent Sober worm attack (starting 21 Nov 2005), the server quarantined over 20,000 e-mails in about 16 hours - and then shut down. We usually process about 1,500 e-mails a day, 500-600 id’d as spam.

An upgrade and some configuration tuning seems to have taken care of this (I hope!). I don’t know if it’s an unreasonable expectation that a server be able to figure out when to stop routing to quarantine and just trash incoming spam, but it would have been nice.

Still, I’d recommend you give it a look.

You may find Chris Linfoot’s site a useful resource for Domino spam fighting:

If you are already using spamJam, you might want to look at an appliance server, something like Barracuda, as a preliminary filter. Although it may sound odd to have two spam filters, this is increasingly common, with the first server filter egregious spam and defined with a fairly wide net (lets more through, but very few false positives), followed up by spamJam’s tighter, but also more customized per user or department, net. You have already spent the money for spamJam, so you might as well use them for the tighter net.
