All Mail Rejected...Domain Not Found in DNS....for all domains

I ran into a strange problem last night that I had never seen or heard of before. Hopefully, someone might be able to offer me some advice.

While returning from vacation last night, I got a call saying our Domino server was rejecting emails for “policy reasons.” I remoted to the server from my computer at home. Apparently, the server could not find any domains in DNS so it was rejecting all emails. (We use that feature to prevent some spam.) Nor could we send because domains could not be found. This was going on for three hours. There was no network problem that we know of. Our DNS servers were working for other apps. All I did was restart the router and smtp tasks, which resolved the problem.

I suspect that the Domino server could not get responses from the DNS servers for some reason. I could see a temporary problem but the server should contact one of the other DNS servers.

Here’s an example of what the log shows over and over for several hours.

08/10/2008 06:17:20 PM SMTP Server [0B3C:006C-0B5C] Mail from seiklahc1995@gateway.com rejected for policy reasons. Domain not found in DNS.

Thanks in advance,

Greg
