Admin install of 8.5 iNotes controls

We have a few thousand users with IE 6 accessing their 6.5 template based mail files just fine right now. We want to upgrade the mail files to use the 8.51 template, not a problem on the server side.

The problem is that for security reasons the users do not have rights to install any controls, etc. in Internet Explorer. This blocks the normal method of installing on demand the first time the user tries to access their mail file. We would like to remotely apply this to IE 6 on all of the users PCs as administrators, is there a method for this published somewhere? I can’t even find a site to download an installable version of the plugin/control to use to enable iNotes 8.5 access.

Subject: There are actually 2 DLLs

We obtained the answers via a PMR with IBM. The iNotes mail will actually work without installing any additional controls. However, there are two DLLs that can be used, and there may be messages presented about the attachment DLL to the user, which is what we needed to avoid for our situation. The DLL to enable enhanced attachment functions, like drag and drop, etc. (it really is a great improvement and worth using IMHO) is DWA85W.DLL. The other DLL is if you have browser cache management enabled on the server, which is mostly used to clear out temp files from a “public” PC, so we do not even use it. It is DVABHO.DLL and both of these can be found on the server under the domino\html subdirectory, the DWA85W.DLL is actually contained in the DWA85W.CAB file and will need to be extracted.

Steps to enable either of these DLLs

  1. If it already exists, delete the old DLL in c:\windows (or \WINNT)\system32. If it does not exist, jump to step 3.

  2. Unregister the old DLL. c:\windows (or \WINNT)\system32>regsvr32 /u ______.dll

  3. Copy the new DLL in c:\windows (or \WINNT)\system32

  4. Register the new dwabho.dll. c:\Windows (or WINNT)\system32>regsvr32 ______.dll

Both DLLs have installed and tested flawlessly for us thus far. Now all we have to do is a bit more testing and then install them on about 7000 PCs, should be fun.

Subject: Use the newest DWA85W.DLL

The version of the DWA85W.DLL file from 11/2009 has a known bug that can display this popup error:

The installation of Lotus iNotes 8.5 Control has been blocked or declined by the user. Do you want to use this on subsequent Lotus iNotes pages?

OK Cancel

EVERY time you try to create a memo. It seems to be a harmless error, but very annoying nonetheless. Make sure that you use the 01/21/2010 (or later, assuming a newer one will eventually appear) version of the DLL.
