Can the 8.5.1 server introduction produce any ill effects for the existing 6.5.6 deployment?
If the 8.5.1 is x86 Linux and the existing 6.5.6 deployment is Windows, is that a consideration?

You should create the 8.5.1 server as you normally do in the 6.5.56 environment. In order to keep your existing 6.5.6 infrastructure happy and to prevent issues you do not want to upgrade the Domino directory on your 6.5.6 servers to the 8.5.1 design. When you are ready to do the actual setup on the 8.5.1 server you should do the setup and not upgrade the directory design immediately. You will need to prohibit the design on the 8.5.1 server from replicating to the 6.5.6 servers. Once you stop the design from replicating then you can upgrade the design on the 8.5.1 server Domino directory. To be honest it is not the best approach though. Any reasons why you can’t upgrade the other servers at the same time? Can you test in a separate Domino environment first?
Can the 8.5.1 server introduction produce any ill effects for the existing 6.5.6 deployment?
Yes if the 8.5.1 design replicates to the other 6.5.6 servers. It is best practice to upgrade the Administration server first (which would include Directory design)

None at all. You can even have Domino clusters on different operating systems

If you do not replicate design changes to the 6.5.6 servers then you should be OK. None of the 6.5.6 servers will be able to take advantage of any of the 8.5.1 features. The 8.5.1 server will not be able to take advantage of those features until the Domino directory on the 8.5.1 is at the 8.5.1 design.
