Access to Domino Mail via a Treo 650 phone

I have a Sprint PCS Treo 650 phone that I am setting up to access mail on a Domino 6.5.3 (win2000) server via POP3. I have enabled POP3 on the Domino server using a POP3 internet sites document requiring authentication but not using SSL. I have enabled POP3Debug=1 to display/log the activity on the Domino server. I am able to successfully access the mail file (user1.nsf) from a browser (iNotes6) with the user name and internet password. I am able to successfully access the mail file from an Outlook client via POP3 with the user name and internet password. I have configured the Treo 650 phone to access the mail file (user1.nsf) on the Domino server requiring authentication with the user name and internet password but not using SSL. Each time I attempt to connect to the Domino server from the Treo 650 I get connected but receive a “Bad Log in” error on the Treo 650 device and then it disconnects. Below is the activity log from the server console for both the successful Outlook connection and the failed Treo 650 connection. Has anyone else experienced this issue and found a resolution?

Subject: Access to Domino Mail via a Treo 650 phone

Is POP3 suppored on the iNotes mail template? I thought POP3 is only allowed with the standard mail template. I have a Treo 650 (Sprint PCS) and I been access POP3 on about 25 mail files. I am the standard R6 template for these mail files.

Try using a regular pop3 client. If you get the POP3 client to access the mail file, then the Treo 650 should connect as well.

I have setup a new user account using the standard mail template (mail6) and reconfigured the Treo 650 phone to use this new account. I still have the same issues when trying to connect to the Domino server.

Subject: Don’t use APOP for authentication

Not sure what email software you’re running on your Treo, but there should be a preference to disable APOP for authentication. For example, in SnapperMail for Treo you can disable APOP in the server settings.

Thank you for your help in this matter. I was able to find the VersaMail setting on the Treo 650 phone to disable APOP for Authentication. Once disabled, authentication with the Domino server worked correctly.

Are you using VersaMail? Or more importantly can you share what are the setting you are using for the particular mail client.

Don’t give me your username but tell me if it is the the full name or the short name.

Look forward to your feedback,

Joe Nelson

I am using VersaMail on this Treo 650 and I have tried using the persons short name and firstname lastname for authentication but neither work. I do not see an option on the Treo to disable APOP.

Any more ideas about this?

I was using the treo (versamail) just fine with my 5.0.13a server, but when I updated to DOmino 6.5.4 I started to see these probles as well.

The first issue that came to my mind is the lenght of the POP3 server banner.

It looks like:

+OK Lotus Notes POP3 server version X2.0 ready <nnnnnnnn.nnnnnnnn.nnnnnnnn.nnnnnnnn@server/domain/us> on server/domain/us.

Is there any way to replace this POP3 Banner/Greeting?

Thanks

Subject: Try the trial version of SnapperMail for the Treo.

just to see if you can get that to work. Can’t speak about VersaMail, but SnapperMail DOES allow you to configure it, and it WILL work if it’s turned off (and it does NOT work if enabled).
