About: Cadenza mNotes

Ok. So I found “Cadenza mNotes” - how good is this product?

And, is it the only choice out there for direct server syncs?

All thoughts and ideas appreciated.

Rich.

We have looked at several and found mNotes to be excellent. It has several good features and best of all you can get a full 30 day trial copy to experiment with.

Subject: Cadenza mNotes for a Linux server?

I was just about to press the GET button when I realised that I did not know if I was getting the user or server version to try out.

I want to test out the server setup. And, when I actually read their admin guide, I also noticed no mention of Red Hat Linux - the IBM reccomended O/S to run Domino 6 on. Sooooo I don’t know if this product will work for me.

I do know what my ISP will do if I ask to replace my Linux server with a Windoze server… After he stops laughing, he will double my costs to make-up for the problems it will cause him to keep my server on his farm… Not a cheerful thought…

What O/S did you use it with?

Rich.

Subject: RE: Cadenza mNotes for a Linux server?

Hi Richard,

I have to say we used it with Windows 2000 Server, but just ask their suppot if Linux is supported.

I would agree with your admin.

I would be happy with Linux servers, but we are not ready yet.

It’s the same code … just depends on where you install it. (Install on your PC, it’s personal. Install on server, it’s server-based.)

I responded to your other thread on this subject … I don’t believe that there is ANY Linux-based sync server software … but that really shouldn’t stop you.

The sync software can run anywhere - does NOT have to be on the Domino server itself.

Subject: RE: No Linux sync software

Thanks for your posts. I’m really shocked that they did not build versions for Linux or Unix.

I can see that it would not be too hard to make up a single user desktop just to let me wirelessly sync. But, that would require multiple computers for multiple users, and likely only service one user at a time. I’m gonna have trouble selling that in Toronto!

Subject: RE: Cadenza mNotes setup for wireless access

Do you (or anybody) know exactly what is required to setup mNotes for wireless access?

I have a Win2000 machine that is always ON (its my FAX machine) - it does not have any Notes software installed.

What would I have to install on it to get mNotes to sync with my Palm Tungsten W wirelessly? (And would this conflict with my existing Notes install on my laptop?)

What else would I have to do to make it work for multiple users?

I’m scouring their site for technical info, sure is well hidden…

All comments welcome!

Rich:

Your fax PC would be a perfect candidate, but it would need the following:

  1. An externally addressable IP

  2. A Notes client

You install the Cadenza service on THAT PC (not yours), and install the mNotes client on your Tungsten (I’m jealous - the W is a beautiful device!). Point your Tungsten at that PC.

End of instructions.

After that, configure users just as you would for standalone.

Incidentally, the Commontime support people are wonderful, but remember they’re in England, so if you’re in the US get them in the morning!

PS: Check their site for the Admin guide … that will be the greatest help to you.

Subject: FYI: Palm Tungsten W “cons”

In general, this is a nice device, but after a week of testing I have the following problem list:

  • Switching between mobile apps. frequently fails with strange PPP, configuration, or even radio hardware errors. My favourite is the one that says my configuration is “all wrong” and that I should go and fix it before trying it again! (The configuration is just fine).

  • PPP (maybe TCP/IP) reliability seems to drop much faster than signal strength.

  • The web browser (Palm Web Pro) does not support Java, or HTTPS connections. Nor does it seem to reliably display graphics.

  • The web browser mangles page layouts, does not support or handle frames very well.

Note: Some of these problems could be carrier (Rogers AT&T in Canada) related, or even related to the test Domino 6 application I created from scratch to play with.

In short, at this time, unless these problems go away, I can’t approve this device for end-users. They would revolt and lynch me!

Then again, its only been a week! Testing will continue with Cadenza. Maybe it will host the Domino app. better…

Rich.

Richard:

The micro-browser issues you have will be found in virtually all handheld devices, so it’s not JUST the Tungsten.

I think you’ll find it does a far better job when aimed at site built for micro-browsers (various WAP or cHTML sites). For instance, try wireless.nwa.com (Northwest Airlines). The “real” site looks horrendous on a small screen; the wireless site works great.

One of the REAL issues you may be facing is coverage. The Tungsten W uses the GPRS systems (right?), and sometimes coverage is spotty. I’m in the Detroit area where things are pretty solid, but I get in trouble quickly when I leave the metro area very far …

Subject: FYI: GPRS coverage

I’m still testing but I’m getting the feeling that data comunication reliability drops off very fast as signal strength decreases. Which is not what I would have expected for a digital connection…

Subject: Does mNotes render on remote devices?

I have been ploughing through a lot of technical literature over the last week or two. I’m note sure, but, doesn’t mNotes also support “hosting” Notes databases on remote devices?

If it does, then at least 1/2 of my troubles are over…

Rich.

Subject: RE: Does mNotes render on remote devices?

mNotes also support “hosting” Notes databases on remote devices?

If you’re aksing whether mNotes syncs custom databases, technically the answer is no.

mNotes strictly syncs PIM stuff (email, calendar, to-do, journal, addresses). There’s a companion product (mForms) which does custom databases, much like the Domino Everyplace Enterprise product does. Right now, mForms is PocketPC only … Palm due to ship soon (supposedly in final beta).

Did I answer the right question?

  • Rob

Subject: RE: Does mNotes render on remote devices?

Yes, thank you.

But, their customer support department says the new mForms will only support Palm OS 5 and later. That leaves a lot of people out!

What about IBM’s Anyplace system? What is that like?

Subject: Palm OS for ever!

Thanks for the points. Even though I reserve the right to b*tch at manufacturers, I am very much a true believer in Palm’s technology.

I have had giggle fits watching hapless Journada users trying to make their devices perform in a useful manner during meetings.

Rich.

Subject: RE: Cadenza support response

Yes, I posed the same question to them, and their answer was very positive and encouraging. I’m going to setup that “FAX” machine to see if it works. I only have one wireless device, so, I won’t be able to test the Workgroup or Enterprise modes. But, if it works I’m sold!

==================================

Hi Richard,

Yes, we work well with iNotes. In the profile, iNotes has to be selected.

Please, do the following:

  1. Open the Cadenza Services monitor on the PC by right-clicking the

Cadenza icon in the tray near the clock on the desktop and choosing 'Open

Cadenza Monitor’

  1. Go to the Lotus Notes tab and click the Open Control Database button -

if this does not work, you can open the control database by going into

Lotus Notes and using File - Database - Open then scrolling down to the

Cadenza folder, opening that folder and then opening the control database.

  1. Go to the Profiles view, select your current profile and double click to

open it.

  1. When open put it in Edit mode.

  2. Go to the Databases section and in the Address and Journal databases,

select iNotes in the Workgroup/Enterprise mode sections.

  1. Save and close the profile and control database.

Kind Regards,

Mary Regan

Hi Richard,

have a look at

www.extendedsystems.com

and there is still Mobile Notes DEE (a bit complicated, but offers all your apps for a PDA).

The trial software from extendedsystems seemed to be excellent. I had it working within a few hours. Without studying hours of documentation.

Hope this helps,

Axel
