8.5FP1 fixes and release date?

So 8.5FP1 used to be slated for June, but now I see online that it’s been moved to July.

And there’s still no fixes listed for it in the Fix List Database. 8.5 Gold is just a little too “iffy” for some customers now, and it would be really nice to see whether 8.5FP1 fixes our primary concerns or if we should wait another month and examine 8.5.1 instead.

Subject: Wait for 8.5.1

I’ve had to roll several clients back to 8.0.2 because Notes crashes on started with 8.5, Standard or Basic, due to some Microsoft updates.

IBM Support suggested to roll back and wait for 8.5.1 unless I wanted to go make a lot of registry changes on each computer that is having the problem.

Subject: LN 8.5 client issues

David, if I may ask, did you determine what MS update(s) caused the crashes to happen? We were having folks with similar issues at times, but for the most part they seemed to ‘correct themselves’ after a while.

Subject: Never found out which MS updates caused it

I should have asked though. The IBM Support guy knew exactly what the problem was after looking at the NSD and I’m sure could have told me what updates were causing it and maybe removing those would have fixed it.

Subject: Email your friendly support guy and find out!

Hi

8.5 fixes a lot of issues about 8.0.2. But your main concern should be how many applications you have.

There is a change in the navigator class in 8.5 that might require you to change a little code in your applications.

You used to put documents and categories, well now you need two separate navigators or after the first category, the navigator always returns null.

The other thing is the queryclose issue but that’s with the R8 client in general. (Standard. Basic doesn’t have this problem)

Subject: anything to worry about with 8.5 server code

other than the hotfixes that have already been posted? or should folks be waiting for 8.5.1 there too?

Subject: Not sure, that’s the biggest reason I want to see the Fix List entries.

We’ve beat the server up pretty good here in our testing, but I’m always wary of “dot-oh” releases. The critical fixes posted by Lotus Support so far seem to take care of a few minor things, but it’d be nice to know of any confirmed, “yes, we’re fixing it” show-stoppers.

Subject: Well, several bad SPRs

We have been running 8.5 in production since March for about 4,000 users and there are several SPRs that hit us badly:* Several memory leaks

  • Sametime awareness

  • ID Vault that generated hundreds of thousands of adminP requests every day (that required a fix on server AND client so it took a while to deploy)

SCR has been good so far and we are rolling out DAOS now so I can’t tell yet.

Our last official Prof hotfix is 526 and I think it contains 6 or 7 SPRs.

ID Vault has been disappointing so far.

Subject: Thanks, Pierre.

We are mostly a web shop so the memory leaks are my main concern. Were they leaks on the server, or client?

Subject: Leaks

The leaks were on the servers. It is harder to tell on the 8.5 client because it has the tendency to freeze. The servers are mail servers so I am not sure how this could apply to your situation. Troubleshooting is not easy like a regular crash because there is no FATAL thread. We had to schedule regular memory dumps so IBM can compare. This being said IBM was quite responsive in issuing Hot Fixes.

Subject: We´ve upgraded…

…about 40-45 servers to Domino 8.5HF84 and so far no problems.A slightly heavier load on the cpu.

Clients still on 703, we´re going to wait for N8.5.1.

Subject: Some points…

R8 has some memory leaks but seems pretty stable so far.

ID Vault is in Beta so pretty much you can’t say anything to IBM there.

On the server side I haven’t had any big issues, just the client. For some reason in some configurations I can’t add a Sametime Server Community, while in others I can.

Subject: Why do you say ID Vault is in Beta ?

It is in all marketing slides of 8.5 and 8.5 is Gold.

Subject: Can’t find the document…

But at some point I read that ID Vault was recommended to be tested first in a non-production server, but I guess that was a document that wasn’t updated at the time that I read it.

However I’ve seen many bugs around ID Vault just to trust all my IDs there. Maybe 8.5.1.
