8.5 Client Hangs at Startup

Anyone seeing 8.5 Standard client hanging at the Getting Started Page? This happened on two separate machines. On 1st one, I did a fresh install and on the 2nd box, fresh install on a newly built XP workstation. Both XP workstations have SP3 installed. New PRM has been log with Lotus support

Subject: Same problem here

Vista Business, SP1, English, Czech locale settings. Hangs indefinitely on startup trying to open the Home page / Getting started page. The server is 8.02, though.

Subject: I’m seeing the same problem - at multiple companies

I’m seeing the same issue and I’m curious to know if there is a solution. I need to configure some db stuff and this ‘hang’ is creating a huge problem.

Does anyone know if there is a fix?

Thanks

Subject: A quick fix

Not sure if this is of any use but I had to delete the folder “workspace” to make it work again.

Subject: Client hangs first time

Hi

When I tested on 4 different systems (3 XP and one Linux), the client hung for a while then the software became responsive.

In all cases, I needed to reboot the whole computer.

To help things out a bit, I did the following before rebooting and it seemed to help

1- Delete the Log.nsf

2- Delete the Cache.ndk

3- Delete all Temp files (Windows and users)

4- Clean up some of the old files I had

5- Delete the Perweb.nsf

Hope this helps a bit.

Subject: “Getting Started” page is the culprit on two XP SP3 machines I’ve tried thus far…

Not sure what it’s doing, but the “Getting Started” page appears to be a problem (XP SP3 on both machines).

  • initial launch was veeeeery slow (as in minutes long, and Notes appeared to freeze). The “Getting Started” page was of course launched automatically.

  • subsequent launches also appeared to freeze (since the client defaults to re-open all tabs that were open on previous close)

  • re-launch–after closing the “Getting Started” tab–was quick

  • attempt to open “Getting Started” from the “Help” menu was very slow once again

Not sure it matters or not, but initial launch on both computers was a non-admin account.

edit:

This occurred with the “All Clients” package.

I can’t recall this same problem occurred initially with the Ubuntu package. It opens just fine at this point on Ibex (8.10).

…which seems to want to take many minutes verging on hours all told. The installer definitely approached an hour, but I neglected to time it. Based on the installer exe size I figured it was going to be a crock-pot style process. Leave that machine alone for half a day kinda thing.

I suspect that there are tons of install files of a new type added, a clue being the massive size of the installer. Then on first client launch, it wants to build and integrate all of those files in the alternate eclipse universe. I would consider this release a “friendly user beta”.
