Dear all,
I have been using 802 now for some time, and I must say that I find the perfomance of the client totally appalling. Every mail takes 3 times the time it took to just display the mail contents (I’m not talking about headers). Also, it eats up a lot of my PC’s memory and CPU.
Finally, I am really annoyed by the problem with locations not always displaying in the status bar; I am a heavy user of locations, because I use different mail accounts.
After I left the Notes business, I kept on using Notes as a “private” client, because I loved it. But I have not ONCE met a business person who told me they had used Notes and liked it, though I regularly see business that use Exchange and would be so much better of with Notes…
After all these years, I realise that Lotus/IBM have still not understood that user perception of Lotus Notes is what will kill it, and I find this really sad.
With love and regrets…
Subject: 8.0.2 performance and locations issue
You must be running a beta version and so it is bound to contain bugs. So any problems you are experiencing is to be expected. 8.0.2 still hasn’t been released as it is still undergoing testing. Should be released by the end of this month.
Subject: Same with previous versions
Dear Pierre,
Thanks for your useful comment. It is likely that you are right. At the same time, I have felt this heaviness of the 8 client since the beginning.
Not to mention that this morning, I realised that my unread marks and folders were not properly synched…
Subject: 8.0.2 Performance and unread marks
I’ve been running 8.0.2 beta since beta 1. Beta 2 is very different to beta 1, it’s much faster to load and is very responsive while running. I agree that IBM did itself no favours when it introduced the Eclipse 8.x version, it compounded a bad user perception of the Lotus client. Notes before R8 was seen as dull compared to Outlook and R8 was slow. Notes is much more featured than Outlook but in my experience people care more about style (and speed) than substance. 8.0.2 brings back a lot of the 7.x speed and of course looks a lot better.
I’m also currently trialling DAMO 8.0.2 beta 2 on Outlook 2007. It’s the best DAMO yet but is let down by Outlook! Outlook 2007 starts slower than Notes 8.0.0/1 and lacks a lot of Notes features that I’m used to. Still, it will appeal to die-hard Outlook users.
Have you checked the unread mark syncing option in the properties of your mail file, both local and server replicas? I’ve found that if you don’t set it in both places there can can be issues.

Subject: Try using this ini parameter…
We had similar issues where any e-mails coming from internet would take upwards of 45 seconds to display. We debugged the problem using process monitor and sent the results to Notes support. Development team came back with the following parameter “BrowserRenderDisable=1” which fixed our slowness issue. Not sure this will work in your environment but worth a try.
Subject: Much faster but images don’t display anymore, even when clicking on link! Thanks anyway

Subject: Images
Images are disabled by default in 8.0.2, I’m not sure about 8.0.1. Enabled them in user preferences or click the on “Show Images” within the mail. Check your mail template version. If that doesn’t work try the notes equivalent of restarting the PC; refresh the mailbox design, fixup, etc.
