This is the risk of doing first hand trial before considering deployement.
Be awar that the current 6.03 release for MacOS X does not run under Panther (MacOS 10.3) either in upgrade or clean install.

What type of error message are you seeing? Can you install R6.0.2?
I installed R6.5 beta M2 on Jaguar and recently upgraded to Panther. The Notes R6.5 beta is still working fine.
I plan on installing the Panther upgrade to another Power Macintosh running Notes R6.0.2 and I’ll let you know if I run into any problems.

We tried installing 6.0.2 and 6.5 on 10.2.8 multiple times, only for the programs to take a dive in OS X (unless the program is marked to run in OS 9 mode, in which case it would run but not deal properly with OS X attachments).

Basically, Notes crashes on start when trying to modufy an existing preference file or when you select to create a new pref. So Notes just can’t start
I did not yet try to install back 6.0.2 (is this a install problem link to all Notes release, when done on Panther???)
Also, I did not yet try to install 6.0.3 on MacOS X 10.2 before upgrading to 10.3…
I will let you know more. As its stand, and also Notes 6.03 finally takes care of the disapering text bug, our plan are still to move as fast as possible our Macs to 10.3 even though if it means Notes 6.0.2
The benefits of panther are just too great!

For all you that have Notes crash on launch, take a look at the user/system Fonts folder. Too many “active” fonts will choke Notes in OS X.
In general, Carbon apps (like Office vx) tend to have problems with too much fonts active.

I don’t think it’s a font issue. Notes does starts in Classic mode, not in native OS X.
I was able to have it start ONCE after copying the Notes pref file from the system 9 pref folder to /library/preferences
But after rebooting I could not start notes native again…
I am quite upset about this because our 10.3 upgrade plan are just in full stop because of Notes… and I can’t get any help from IBM. Here in France they suggested that (as no one knows about Notes for MacOS) I should post in this forum !

Did you try uninstalling multiple times until the install program defaults to “clean install”… ?
We have installed 6.5 and 6.0.2 without issues, but after a period of using the Notes client in either version, the Notes app will eventually terminate.

Yes. I did a file search to remove all Notes pref and files. The strange thing is that we try a 6.03 install on a Mac running under OS9. We also get an error 3 (memory issue as on OSX) when trying to create a new setup.
What’s going on???

I’m not a good test ground to be honest
I will certainly try to upgrade to 6.0.3 (I’m running Mac OS X 10.2.8) and will report back with any issues, but I’m not planning on upgrading anytime soon to Panther when it comes out (much as I’d like to).
I also don’t run the Classic environment, so no joy there I’m afraid!

Do you have 6.0.2 running successfully on MAC 10.2.8 ? The MAC we are testing here continues to receive “uncorrectable” errors unless enabled for “classic” mode. Any suggestions?

Re versions, no I don’t have 6.0.2 running… my OS is 10.2.8 but Notes is still at 6.00 on my Mac.
I’m not privy to our organisation’s Passport details, so I can’t get any updates for the client (the downloads link on the 6.0.3 update page at the LDD results in “We are sorry, your selection resulted in zero matches” – good eh??), and as others have discovered, there are no 6.x client updates for the Mac on the main IBM site.
This has probably been asked before, but is the trial client fully enabled? i.e. does it just differ from the “proper” client in terms of its license?

OK, it USED to work for me. I tried the 6.0.3 trial client installation (see thread elsewhere) and despite removing that, everything Notes-related on my Mac is now hosed.

hmmm… yes, well if you clean up the machine, you should be able to install and run in “CLASSIC” mode… one thing we had to do was remove the install file from the hard drive and re-copy it for the install to work properly again…
go figure…
still have the same issues with the client having an uncorrectable error when NOT run in “CLASSIC” mode…

Haven’t got Classic!
As far as my Mac’s concerned, Notes can go jump. I only use it for my site and a couple of other things: I have 6.0.3 on my work PC, and my site also has a web interface, so no worries.
If IBM can’t be bothered, neither can I. I’ll just stick to Java and Obj C on the Mac ; - )

Hello Benedict. Nice to read you again!I have done some additional trouble shooting. I used the disk utility to repair permission and retry 6.03. Stil does not work.
I could thanksfully go back and install 6.0.2CF1 on Panther.
I would not recommand to any Mac user to install 6.0.3 right now. It looks that there is an issue with 6.0.3 both on MacOS X and MacOS 9…
Maybe someone from IBM could jump in.
Also, as I wrote, Panther IS a must have for business users. So many things works so much better and faster on a corporate environnement. For example:

complete windows printing integration and network connect (no more DAVE)

no more .ds_store mess all over the place on the server you browse

built-in zip (also this one could be improved)

better Safare

better LDAP

Better proxy

one more thing…we were able to install back 6.0.2 under Panther on a lotus notes ‘virgin’ system. Then we tried to upgrade again to 6.0.3… and boom no more Notes as notes before.
Thanksfully, using the ‘upgrade’ install of 6.02 we rescued this Mac and got Notes working again.
So:
you can try upgrading to 6.0.3, but make sure you have 6.0.2 install on hands to write over 6.03 if it is failling on our system too.

Thanks for the tips. Sigh, talk about “second-class citizens”! (Not so much with the Panther thing – it is a new release of the OS after all, but more with the general state of play in upgrading on OS X).
