I’m trying again for help. Mail received with Japanese characters is just blobs in Notes client - perfect when I view the same document in a browser. Is this some fundamental problem with Notes, or can I configure the client (or the message) to be readable.
Since my last suggestion about the db being multi-lingual didn’t appear adequate, let’s take a step to something more basic.does your OS have the language installed?
I do it all the time here @ a Japanese auto mgr.
It’s got some issues in some views but is fine on forms.
I would have thought that the ability to see it correctly in the browser (simple IE) means that this question is answered, unless I’m missing something. I do not even have to configure the browser - it “knows” that the characters are Japanese.
Another pointer is that it’s a purely Rich Text issue - the Japanese characters are OK in the Subject.
We set the Format preference for incoming mail in the Domino Directory for the user having the issue to “Keep in senders format” from Notes Rich Text and this worked.
Thanks for this - my task now is to see if this is also a valid answer in R5 (they have some R5 servers around still so the Domino Directory hasn’t been upgraded yet).
On Win2K (not XP) clients you may also need to change the default fonts in Notes. This is because XP does something interesting called “soft mapping” of fonts to find an appropriate font to use when the native font file doesn’t contain the ncessary characters.
Under File - Preferences - User Preferences go to the Basics tab and choose Default Fonts. Based on how your SMTP mail is arriving you’ll need to change Default Monospace Font or another entry to make sure that the font file specified has the characters.
On a totally seperate note - you can upgrade the design of the Domino Directory before upgrading your servers. Upgrade your admin server and the domino directory design to R6, make sure the design update was applied successfully and replicated out to all servers and then upgrade your other servers. We took that approach in our upgrade and had no issues.
