Your connection has expired. Please sign in again

how long does a connection last? I posted another question about some 5 minutes ago… :-?

Subject: Your connection has expired. Please sign in again

Dunno, but this is probably IBM/Lotus/Iris’ way of “improving” site performance by booting users to reduce concurrent sessions so they don’t really have to do the homework to fix their code or invest in better hardware.

Subject: RE: Your connection has expired. Please sign in again

Oh that’s cute. This site has only been running at excellent performance for the last 6 years.

Guess the “Schilling” in your name is literal, huh?

Subject: RE: Your connection has expired. Please sign in again

I’d hardly call the application performance here excellent - either now or prior to the latest design/architecture changes. I can’t count how many times Notes.net has frozen on me while I’ve tried to open a message, or to create a new topic, so please don’t tell me how wonderful the performance of this application has been historically.

As for my name, I haven’t the first clue what you mean by “literal”. It is my genuine name, if that’s what you mean.

Subject: Well…

Schillings are legal tender in Austria, and just check on cnn.com what those austrians can pull off in california these days

Subject: Otherwise… re: Well…

Subject: RE: Otherwise… re: Well…

I didn’t get the “point” of your previous message because it’s so obviously NOT what I’ve been doing! If I was a shill, I’d be talking up and down about how wonderful this site is and how wonderful it always has been. Obviously that is NOT what my post here is about and either you do not understand the very meaning of the word you’re citing, or you are very confused…or both.

I’m not down on Lotus Notes, and I’m not down on this site. I just think that the manner in which recent design and architectural changes were implemented leaves much to be desired, and that performance can be very sluggish at times. The fact is there is no other forum which has the breadth of knowledge within it found here, and that’s why I’m here to begin with.

Subject: Fair point well made (WAS: Otherwise… re: Well…)

If only you’d started off that way.

Nathan -

Is it possible for you to be respectful of dissenting opinions?

Searching on your name in these forums produces a result set that includes many times were you turn a simple difference of opinion into a personal attack.

It’s great that you have so much technical knowledge. And you are so fond of pointing out forum etiquette. Maybe you need to review the policies again – or take a break from these forums.

The original poster did nothing more then express displeasure with Notes. A good % of the Notes community would agree that Lotus has much to fix in their code. And it would be nice if they fixed it instead of rushing new software to market. Today’s enterprise has shifted focus from the “latest & greatest” to ROI. Once again Lotus/IBM is missing the big picture.

Lotus Notes is a dieing software and it’s sad.

The forum is a great resource, and yes it’s free. But it is no good to anyone if you can’t get to it, it boots you off, or takes forever to use. Free is no excuse for poor quality.

There are many free forums that operate with many more people, more posts, and more concurrent users – and they operate at performance levels that Lotus could only dream about.

But all of this is just an opinion. It is not personal to any specific person.

Please respect people and leave your personal attacks where they belong, in your head.

About performance… Keep in mind that the cluster of servers composing the LDD site is a working lab. When using LDD, we’re helping Lotus field test the latest builds of Domino before the software reaches us. View the HTML source once in a while. You’ll notice different build dates, and different platforms too. A well tuned cluster would have better performance. This is a working lab.

Mr. Gold,

Do you really consider the original response, that IBM is trying to avoid doing homework or improving hardware infrastructure, to be anything but an ad hominem attack? Such a remark is precisely showing a lack of respect for the hardworking team at DeveloperWorks. I know some of those people personally, and Mr. Schilling’s remarks are unnecessarily abrasive.

Since you care to go through and read my prior posts, feel free to look through the archived forums as well. And while you’re at it, head over to OpenNTF.org.

This forum is one of the oldest and most reliable of its kind on the 'net. It also has unmatched participation and support by a volunteer group of vendor developers. Constructive observations about its design and performance are welcomed, but catty remarks deserve catty responses.

Nathan,

You seem to be missing the point entirely.

Respecting someone’s opinion means that you can completely disagree with it, but fully believe they are entitled to have it. It is the basis by which this country was formed (though our history shows we have a very hard time following our own advice).

When you personally attack someone for their opinion, you are projecting a feeling that the person is somehow a lesser person for even having the opinion.

Your opinion is that the post was not constructive. Right, wrong, or indifferent, they are entitled to their post without being personally attacked.

Now, I have expressed my opinion here without making personal attacks against you. How would it have made you feel if I said:

“You are a hateful little man who is too full of their own self-importance to recognize the validity of other human beings”.

You basically did the same thing by implying the meaning of the person’s name was reflective of their personality (and even went one step further by posting a link to the definition).

The person was venting about a piece of software and a company (an inanimate object and a faceless beast of a corporation).

[The person was venting about a piece of software and a company (an

What do you think a corporate is beyond a collection of individuals? What do
you think a piece of software is beyond the dedicated effort of a collection of
individuals?

Yes, my reply to Mr. Schilling was not constructive. That was intentional, and
always has been, everytime I’ve replied to someone needlessly abusive in the
last 6 years of participating here. Mr. Schilling is welcome to hold the
opinion that the LDD forums are slow. He’s even welcome to say so and offer
possible solutions. But his statement implied that those who were responsible
for this site were either uncaring or incompetant. That wasn’t necessary, by
any stretch.

Look, no company is without individuals. And this forum in particular has a
lot of caring individuals who try to help their customers. Claiming that
they’re bad at their jobs is not going to help.

Subject: A “faceless beast of a corporation”??? Talk about hateful comments.

While I won’t address your personal exchange with Nathan, I would take issue with one comment, and ask a question about another.

I take issue with the idea that Notes is dying. It just isn’t happening. Granted that IBM sometimes misses the boat, they are bringing out new releases (6.5 recently, 7 next year), and are increasingly incorporating Notes as part of their newer Lotus Workplace strategy. It is not a dying product.

As for the question, what are the free forums that have many more posts than this? I am just curious.

Subject: RE: Your connection has expired. Please sign in again (to Nathan T)

Lotus has been missing the boat since day 1. There never should have been a day when they had to nitpick at exchange vs. notes seats. When you go from 90% market saturation to fiting precise counts, you have already lost.

Secondly, without even thinking twice, try:

One TOPIC alone has over 200,000 posts (they have multiple topics).

And beyond that, try most any c/c++ forum, unix forum, etc…

Subject: RE: Your connection has expired. Please sign in again (to Nathan T)

None of these forums are vendor-sponsored, I see. So when you go to visualbasicforum.com, you aren’t talking to the MS developers who created VB.

Subject: RE: Your connection has expired. Please sign in again (to Nathan T)

And if you want a vendor sponsored forum, try:

http://support.crystaldecisions.com/forums

They have over 100,000 main threads with exponential discussions.

And that is a tiny little piece of software, compared to the behemoth that is Notes & Domino.

Hey, I love and hate this product. Some days its the best thing under the sun. Others it makes my hair fall out. And this really holds true for all software (and hardware for that matter).

Subject: So I was curious

I went to the forum you mention, and it has 13 new threads today, with a total of 19 total posts, as far as I can tell, and that is split up among all its component subforums. At this point, this forum has 48 new threads and 148 posts alone, while the matching 4&5 Gold forum has 80 new threads and 205 total posts. I didn’t even bother with the other component forums. The Visual Basic forum is much more popular, but my rough count still didn’t seem any more popular than here.

By the way, they don’t have 200,000 messages in a thread, they have mini-forums around concepts, and they have over 200,000 in a mini-forum. At least, that is what it looks like from a uick overview.

Subject: RE: So I was curious

I never said they had 200,000 messages in a thread. I said they had 200,000 posts in a topic. And yes, the topic is the mini-forum. Kind of like R4/5 is a mini-forum representing a specific area of Notes - Notes split version, VB split concepts – really who cares how the forum(s) are setup. Their “General” topic is equivalent to a forum, with OVER 200,000 posts. And that was just one topic. The entire “forum” part of this thread related to comments that seemed to put Lotus at the top of some “forum” pedestal (which they by far are not). They do a great job – but so do many others – which I have named a few already (whether you agree or disagree – those others are equal to and in some cases better then this forum)

My point throughout has been that the person who posted the response had a right to post what they did without personal attack.

PLUS - I agree that the technical aspects of the forum can be quite frustrating at times - and some of the nonsense that I have experienced with this product since R3 can be more frustrating - which escapes me as to why these things have not been fixed - at some point somebody is to blame - because these things are not coding themselves - which means someone has done a poor job - and even may not care.

Don’t you think there are people who do a poor job because they just don’t care. And have you put IBM/Lotus on such a pedestal that you believe they don’t suffer from those kind of staff. I hope not.

And finally, you and Nathan are entitled to your opinions, and the person that posted the response was entitled to his, and I am entitled to mine.

Honestly, none of anything we have said has the slightest meaning or impact on anything except we got to say our peace.

Probably more then enough said. Thanks for sharing your opinions.
